Is Fofana the worst-ever BlueCo signing at Chelsea? Ranking the top six duds

OPINION

BlueCo have been relentless with their spending as the custodians of Chelsea Football Club.

Close to £2billion worth of signings have come through the doors at Stamford Bridge since the 2022 takeover but, unfortunately for the powers at be, there have been numerous misses among the hits.

7Chelsea have overseen a multitude of signings, and it's fair to say a select few have not worked out at all

Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Joao Pedro are the standout arrivals with goals and game-winning displays aplenty, and look set to be joined by Morgan Rogers, who has nine goals and assists in 11 games.

His latest contribution came from the penalty spot against Liverpool on Wednesday night in a Carabao Cup tie which ended with Chelsea getting beaten 6-5 in the shootout at Anfield.

It was Wesley Fofana who was tasked with the decisive spot-kick, one that he sent on a trajectory towards the upper rows of the Kop End.

Dejected and despondent, the centre-back crouched with his head in his hands seconds after a moment that encapsulated just how disappointing and underwhelming his time at Chelsea has been.

Fofana, who also gave away the penalty for Liverpool's goal in normal time, is one player who will be considered as a miss during BlueCo's ownership, but where does he rank in a list of their worst signings? - talkSPORT.com has made its judgement...

6. Filip Jorgensen - £20.7m

Signed from Villarreal in 2024, goalkeeper Jorgensen squandered an opportunity to nail the no.1 spot at Chelsea when competing against the occasionally shaky Robert Sanchez.

The Dane started in all but one of the matches during their 2024/25 Conference League title run, but featured on just 11 occasions in the Premier League across two seasons.

Jorgensen notably produced a howler against Paris Saint-Germain in last season's Champions League as he passed the ball straight into the path of Bradley Barcola, before being lobbed by Vitinha.

This happened at 2-2 in the first leg of the last 16 tie, and Chelsea lost 5-2 on the night before being thrashed 8-2 on aggregate in a result that summed up their horrendous campaign.

Another big mistake occurred at Aston Villa as he let a Marco Asensio shot squeeze through his hands in the 89th minute to lose the match 2-1, with Jorgensen having only one Premier League clean sheet in 11.

7Jorgensen has not been able to make the most of his limited chances in goal for Chelsea and made some big errors

His inclusion in this list may be considered harsh, but the 24-year-old has never established himself as a reliable pair of hands or performed well enough to be part of the club's long-term future.

Jorgensen is now on loan at sister club Strasbourg, and will return at the end of this season with the experienced Emi Martinez and starlet Mike Penders to compete with - both of whom are better options.

5. Joao Felix - £42.6m

Chelsea should have seen the warning signs over Felix when he was sent off 58 minutes into his Premier League debut and scored four goals in 20 matches during his 2022/23 loan from Atletico Madrid.

However, the west Londoners opted to bring him to the club on a permanent deal in 2024 and, once again, the Portuguese forward flattered to deceive.

Felix, who was once the fifth most expensive transfer in history with a £113m move from Benfica to Atletico, made only three starts in the league and was frustrating to watch in front of goal.

He joined AC Milan on loan less than six months on from his return to Chelsea, and a sale to Al Nassr followed at the end of the season.

7It remains a mystery as to why Chelsea chose to bring Felix back to the club after a poor first spell

The 2019 Golden Boy winner is a technically gifted player once tipped for stardom on the world stage, but he rarely showed any glimpses of his quality in a blue shirt.

Chelsea's decision to re-sign Felix was questionable to say the least, and they will have rued it when assessing such an inconsistent and disillusioned second spell that could have been avoided.

4. Mykhailo Mudryk - £90m

Arsenal looked set to sign Ukrainian winger Mudryk during the 2023 January transfer window, but it was Chelsea who landed a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk.

He joined midway through a season in which no player managed to cover themselves in glory and, whilst he assisted two goals, he did not find the back of the net himself.

Mudryk eventually scored for the first time in October that year, only for subsequent goalless periods to diminish any argument in favour of Chelsea getting their money's worth for the near £100m purchase.

In December 2024, the 25-year-old was provisionally suspended for a failed drugs test and he remained away from the pitch until earlier in 2026 when his case was resolved.

This meant that Mudryk was unable to play professional football for a year-and-a-half, a missed opportunity for him to show improvement and justify why Chelsea spent so much on his transfer.

However, given that money talks, a tally of ten goals and 11 assists in 73 matches across all competitions before his suspension is simply not enough for such an expensive player in an attacking position.

7Mudryk missed out on months of football due to his suspension but, when he has played for Chelsea, he has not hit the heights

3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - £12m

With 68 Premier League goals scored in 128 appearances for Arsenal, the signing of Aubameyang looked relatively shrewd given he added experience to a Chelsea squad that began to decrease in average age.

The striker also worked with their then head coach Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and made his debut in the German's last match in charge, a shock 1-0 Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

Aubameyang did go on to score three goals in consecutive matches, but they would turn out to be his only strikes for the club.

Graham Potter gave him limited minutes throughout the rest of the campaign and even omitted the Gabon star from his 25-man squad for the Champions League knockout stages.

With one Premier League goal scored, Aubameyang had the worst domestic campaign of his career at Chelsea after previously hitting highs of 19, 31 and 22 in France, Germany and England.

7Aubameyang was a shadow of his former self during a short and frustrating spell at Chelsea the lacked an impact in front of goal

Aubameyang could have rediscovered his fine form from Arsenal if Tuchel remained at Chelsea but, alas, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

In the end, he joins a list of strikers including Alvaro Morata, Radamel Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain to move to Stamford Bridge with big reputations and do anything but what was expected of them.

2. Alejandro Garnacho - £40m

Manchester United fans were riled up in June 2025 when Garnacho posted an image on social media of him wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford's name on the back.

This came after he fell out of favour with Ruben Amorim and was told to find a new club, which turned out to be their Premier League rivals Chelsea.

With one goal scored in 24 league outings, Garnacho has been one of the most frustrating players to watch in a royal blue shirt.

In the days after a dismal performance during a 1-0 defeat against his former club in April, talkSPORT reported that Chelsea were already willing to sell the winger.

7Garnacho is still young at 22 years old, but there is little to suggest why Chelsea should keep him for the long run

Chelsea came to the acceptance that his move has been unsuccessful but, similar to Felix, there were signs that this was a likely outcome as he had a sour end to his United career.

Garnacho was criticised for his attitude having gone straight down the tunnel when being substituted after a Patrick Dorgu red card in a season where he found the target in the league only six times.

He eventually got his wish and moved to Chelsea, only to be listed for transfer less than a year later and sign for Villa on loan for the 2026/27 season.

The deal includes a conditional obligation to buy for Villa, something that is reported to be easily achievable - but he is yet to make a single start and has played just 92 minutes of football in total.

As things stand, Garnacho will return to Chelsea next summer with an uncertain future at the club, one where many fans will probably be happy to see the back of him.

1. Wesley Fofana - £75m

BlueCo's most expensive signing in their first window at Chelsea was Fofana, who made the switch from Leicester City a year after they beat the Blues in the FA Cup final.

A knee injury disrupted his debut season, and then he didn't play a single minute in the 2023/24 campaign due to an ACL injury, one that can be very difficult to properly return from due to lengthy recovery.

7Fofana is a signing that cost Chelsea so much money, and his performances have not justified the fee that was paid

However, it is tough to pinpoint a performance from any of his 78 Chelsea appearances that suggests the club did well to make him their most pricey defensive signing ever.

Fofana has only managed to keep 11 Premier League clean sheets in his four active seasons so far, the last of which came during the 2-0 home win over Brentford in January.

He has not come off the bench in their last three league fixtures and did little, if anything, to convince Xabi Alonso of giving him another start anytime soon against Liverpool.

Fofana clumsily gave away a penalty just moments after Rogers put Chelsea ahead when he handled the ball, with Cody Gakpo netting his effort from 12 yards.

Then, during a moment of pressure in the shootout, he smashed his penalty way off target and sent it into the crowd of jeering Liverpool fans to confirm his side's exit from the competition.

It summed up his Chelsea career - a big-money arrival on a reported £220,000-a-week contract that has been given plenty of chances to impress but not taken them, albeit whilst dealing with injury issues.

Fofana still has a little under three years left on his contract and, if the club were to sell him, they are unlikely to recoup a fee close to what they paid Leicester in 2022.

There isn't much to celebrate with him off the pitch either due to his various driving offences, so it will have to take something special for him to transform his time at Chelsea for the better.
