Arsenal have received a boost before Sunday’s Premier League game against Liverpool at Anfield, with three players back in training.
The Gunners travel to Merseyside looking for a response after their Carabao Cup exit. Fourth-tier Fleetwood Town knocked them out in the fourth round, winning 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi put Fleetwood ahead before half-time, and Viktor Gyokeres equalised after the break. Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch then made several saves as the hosts held on to reach the next round.
The result made Arsenal the first reigning Premier League champions to lose a League Cup tie against a fourth-tier side.
Their form in the league has been far stronger. Arsenal are second on 21 points, level with leaders Manchester City, who have a better goal difference.
Mikel Arteta’s side have conceded only five goals in eight league matches, and they beat Everton 2-0 last weekend. Liverpool are fourth on 15 points, six behind Arsenal, and a win at Anfield would close that gap.
Arsenal will still be without several key players. Bukayo Saka is expected to miss at least six weeks with a quad injury he suffered against Bayern Munich.
William Saliba has yet to play this season because of a long-term back problem.
Max Dowman is also unavailable. An independent regulatory commission rejected Arsenal’s appeal against his red card at Fleetwood, so he must serve a three-match suspension.
The ban rules him out of the Liverpool game and the following league matches against Hull City and Newcastle United.
Arteta, speaking at his pre-match conference ahead of the trip to Anfield, confirmed that Declan Rice, Christos Tzolis and Riccardo Calafiori all trained on Friday.
Noni Madueke remains a doubt. Arteta said the winger will be assessed after Saturday’s training session.
Declan Rice, Christos Tzolis and Riccardo Calafiori all trained today before Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool.
Noni Madueke is also in contention to play, providing he comes through tomorrow’s session. https://t.co/pVxzsmiEK8
