Fernandez only joined City less than two months ago, but has already eyed a future spell elsewhere

Viewed as one of the world's best midfielders, the 25-year-old started out in the River Plate academy before featuring for the senior side.

He has since played for Benfica, Chelsea and City, but he has made it clear he intends on a second spell in his native Argentina.

What has Enzo Fernandez said about his future?

"I want to return to River, I've said it a lot of times and every time I have the opportunity," he told Los Edul, as per ESPN. "I would love to and I will return at some point, for sure. It's something I really want."

Fernandez then insisted he won't back down from his claim, adding: "It's OK. I'll take care of the record. If I say it, it's because I feel it.

"I need to return to River to win things and enjoy the River world for more years than I've been here."

Whilst he is eyeing a return to River Plate, the 2022 World Cup winner shut down the idea of it happening soon amid his recent City move.

He stressed: "I'm here, I have a long contract in Manchester, there's a long way to go before that."

Fernandez's career from River Plate to City

At boyhood club River Plate, Fernandez hit 12 goals and ten assists in 53 appearances from 2020 to 2022.

He won the Argentine top-flight title and cup throughout this spell, which also featured a loan to Defensa y Justicia.

There, Fernandez lifted the Copa Sudamericana - the South American equivalent of the Europa League - and Recopa Sudamericana - where the Sudamericana winners face the Copa Libertadores champions.

Fernandez has made it clear that he wants to return to River Plate, the first club of his professional career

Benfica signed him in June 2022, and he was part of their Portuguese league title success in the following season.

However, he left halfway through for Chelsea in a £106.8m move after his excellent performance for Argentina at the World Cup, where he won the Young Player Award.

Fernandez totalled 170 appearances for the Blues with 31 goals and 30 assists, and collected winners' medals in the Club World Cup and Conference League.

Earlier in 2026, he fuelled rumours of a move to Real Madrid, only for the Spanish club to dismiss any plans of bringing him to the club.

City then became interested and completed a signing on the last day of the summer window.

Fernandez has reunited with Enzo Maresca, who was his head coach at Chelsea, and scored his first City goal in the 5-3 Premier League win over Sunderland.
