Ex-Manager: Gyokeres can be lethal for Arsenal, this is exactly how

The 28-year-old, who arrived in North London in a £63.5million deal in the summer of 2025, scored his first goal of the season on Tuesday as the Gunners were stunningly knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two-side Fleetwood Town on penalties.

Yet many are still hoping to see the Sweden international hit the heights expected of him when he made the move from Sporting CP.

Arsenal told to get more crosses into the box

Gyokeres did score 21 goals across all competitions for Arsenal last season, with Kai Havertz injured for much of the campaign.

Havertz's return this season has seen the 28-year-old struggle for minutes, even with the German struggling for form.

"I've never disliked him. Brighton signed him first, and then they sent him out on loan to Coventry and he did really well at Coventry," King told Football Insider.

"He scored a lot of goals at Coventry, and then for some reason, there wasn't any offers from Premier League. He went to Lisbon, again, where he scored a lot of goals.

"I thought at the time it was a good signing. There should have been at least five or six clubs in for him, and Arsenal ended up bringing him in.

"I thought at the time it was going to be a really good buy for Arsenal, but he's taken time to settle in. I worry that when you get an out and out centre-forward, you've got to get the ball in the box.

"You saw with Man City's biggest problem against Villa. You've got a centre-forward who scores goals, and the amount of crosses that came in the box was poor. The moment it did, it becomes a danger, and I think it's the same with Gyokeres."

Both Havertz and Gyokeres will be in contention, and both players played the 90 minutes against Fleetwood.

The Swede was not overly impressive despite his goal, but there is far more to say about Havertz's display.

The German missed chance after chance and would ultimately shoulder much of the blame for Arsenal's untimely exit.

Arteta has routinely opted for Havertz in games against more difficult opposition, but it remains to be seen whether he can justify the same action on Sunday.
