**Date:** Saturday 31st October 2026
**Venue**: Stamford Bridge
**Kick-off:** 12:30 GMT
So, after following up the Tottenham humiliation with a League Cup trip to Anfield that ended exactly as expected, Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge looking for answers, confidence, and wistfully for a fully functioning centre-forward.
Unfortunately, the football gods have decided we’ve had enough joy for one season. Joao Pedro is out, taking with him a sizeable chunk of our attacking threat. Emegha’s debut had all the reassuring composure of someone accidentally being called up from the club shop, Danny Welbeck remains an excellent option for 45 minutes but a questionable one for 90, and despite Xabi Alonso’s apparent wish to prove otherwise, Morgan Rogers as a false 9 remains less of a tactical innovation and more of a cry for help.
At the back, things aren’t much brighter. Our defence has spent most of the season operating like a colander, and with Lacroix injured at Anfield, we’re once again likely to be treated to the sight of the Premier League’s most reluctant footballer dragging his feet vaguely in the direction of danger while everyone else deals with the actual defending. Meanwhile, somewhere beneath Stamford Bridge, Estevão continues to exist only as a rumour. Witnesses claim to have seen him in training, but until he accumulates more than seven consecutive minutes on a football pitch, investigators remain sceptical.
The positive news is that Cole Palmer has served his suspension. The negative news is that he can only occupy one position at a time. Despite his best efforts, he remains unable to simultaneously play striker, left wing, right wing, centre-back and defensive midfielder, which is unfortunate given current circumstances.
After a week reportedly featuring peace talks between captain and manager, United arrive winless in eight, fresh from losing at home to Bournemouth and looking like a club whose biggest attacking threat is a strongly-worded statement from the captain. In other words, they’re exactly the sort of basket case Chelsea specialise in restoring to full health. If history is any guide, by 3pm today Carrick will be conducting a lap of honour while Sky Sports debate whether United are back.
**Predicted Match Timeline**
**12′** – Chelsea dominate possession, create three chances, score none.
**21′** – Commentator notes that Manchester United haven’t won in eight games for roughly the seventeenth time.
**29′** – Chelsea miss a sitter. Social media immediately demands three new strikers in January.
**38′** – United score with their first shot after a hopeful cross bounces off six different players and falls kindly to someone who hasn’t scored since Easter 2025.
**Half-Time:**
**Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United**
Is it over yet?
**54′** – Alonso introduces Welbeck. Stamford Bridge collectively gasps at this unusually early substitution from Alonso.
**63′** – Welbeck immediately looks our best striker.
**64′** – Everyone asks why he didn’t start.
**75′** – Estevão appears ready to come on.
**76′** – Alonso changes his mind and sends on a defender instead.
**82′** – Palmer produces something absurd to equalise.
**89′** – Stamford Bridge begins to believe.
**90+4′** – Chelsea concede from a set-piece after nobody marks anyone.
Carrick survives another week.
Chelsea fans leave Stamford Bridge wondering how a team capable of scoring four against anyone can simultaneously defend like they’re legally prohibited from tackling.
**MANAGER’S VIEWS**
Going into today’s game, Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, says _“We are back in Premier League mode and that for me is the main competition for us – this year and almost every year. It is a big one. We didn’t have long to prepare but its really important after the last home game we had that we keep winning games and get that winning feeling.”_
Manchester United manager, Michael Carrick, meanwhile, says _“We’re striving to make things better, really. I think as a staff and as a group and as players for sure. It’s not ideal, it’s not nice at times having to go through certain situations, but actually it finds you out, it tests you, it pushes you to make things better and that’s exactly where we’re at. We’re back to work, back focused and hungry for a result on Saturday. Massively looking forward to it. It’s a huge game of football, two good clubs, good history. But more importantly for us, we want to pick up points, we want to win games and it’s the next opportunity to do that.”_
