Martinez gets cold shoulder from Carrick after generational head-loss at Chelsea

Lisandro Martinez sent off at Chelsea

Lisandro Martinez was ignored by Manchester United boss Michael Carrick after getting two yellow cards in 82 seconds against Chelsea.

The defender received his marching orders in a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge after a brainless shove on Wesley Fofana which resulted in a Chelsea penalty.

Carrick refused to acknowledge Martinez on his way down the tunnel

Cole Palmer dispatched the spot-kick to put the Blues 2-0 up, with Morgan Rogers having broken the deadlock early in the second half.

Rogers breezed past Martinez for the goal – and forced the Argentina defender into a clumsy challenge for his first yellow card.

It left Man United heading for yet another defeat amid already intense pressure on Carrick, who appeared to blank Martinez as he headed off down the tunnel.

Carrick was backed by the board ahead of the trip to London, but time is ticking on his time in the dugout.

Martinez in hot water again

The costly red card comes weeks after Martinez called out the United hierarchy in a bombshell interview.

Martinez's dismissal came moments after talkSPORT's Stuart Pearce had slammed his second-half display.

"Martinez has lost his head, he's making some incredible rash decisions," the legendary former England defender said.

Speaking after the red card, Pearce added: "I'm not sure I've seen a worse 20 minutes from a player."

Is Martinez's United career over?

Ex-Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole, commentating on the game for TNT Sports, went as far to suggest Martinez's United days are numbered.

"Martinez, it's run its course," he said. "In a Manchester United shirt, he's at the scene of the crime too often, so I think that's probably his time done."

It's the second time the 28-year-old Argentina international has been sent off since joining United from Ajax four years ago.

Martinez was also dismissed in a 2-1 home loss to Leeds back in April.

His latest indiscretion was emblematic of United's current plight.

The 13-time Premier League champions have won just one of their opening nine league games this season, losing four.

As such, they find themselves hovering just a point above the relegation zone.

United are also winless in nine matches in all competitions, losing four of their last five, including a humbling 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como – after which captain Bruno Fernandes publicly criticised Carrick's tactics, resulting in his being dropped for last weekend's home loss to Bournemouth.

And while fans continue to protest against the club's owners, the person who will likely ultimately pay the price is Carrick himself.
