That is according to former PGMOL chief and FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who has exclusively told Football Insider that the Man United captain's tackle met the criteria for serious foul play.
United's horror start to the campaign continued at Stamford Bridge through second-half strikes from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Things could have been even worse for the visitors in West London after captain Fernandes avoided a sending-off for a wild challenge in the 24th minute.
Referee Peter Bankes did not spot the incident, while VAR official James Bell failed to even recognise the aggressive nature of the tackle.
Keith Hackett says Bruno Fernandes deserved a red card for Josh Acheampong tackle
Fernandes was clearly fired up at Stamford Bridge after being forced to watch on from the bench as United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth last weekend.
Serious foul play is defined by the Premier League as a tackle that occurs when a player challenges for the ball using excessive force, or endangers the safety of an opponent.
Hackett believes Fernandes should have walked for the challenge, as he exclusively told Football Insider: "He is off the ground, out of control, and should have received a straight red for serious foul play."
Fernandes could be nearing the end of his Man United career
Fernandes' return to the United team had little impact on their fortunes, and he is clearly not enjoying his football under Carrick right now.
The 32-year-old was visibly emotional as he showed his appreciation towards the travelling United fans after full-time at Stamford Bridge.
Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that United are planning to let Fernandes leave when his contract expires next June.
His lack of form this season, and clear frustration being taken out while on the pitch, both show that he looks to be coming to the end of his time at the club, and may even leave in the new year.
