Everton's Trip To Newcastle: Opposition View, Team News, How To Watch

The league is a different story. David Moyes’ side have lost their last two Premier League games, both 2-0, against Chelsea and Arsenal. They have won only one of their last seven league matches, a 1-0 home win over Ipswich in September.

Jarrad Branthwaite should return. He missed the Arsenal game and Thursday’s cup tie while following concussion protocols, and Moyes has said he expects the defender to be available on Monday.

Jake O’Brien partnered James Tarkowski on Thursday, so Moyes has a decision to make at centre-back.

Everton have won the last two meetings. Before Thursday’s cup win, they won 3-2 at St James’ Park in February. Branthwaite and Beto scored in that game, and Barry scored the late winner after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall set him up.

Newcastle’s last win in the fixture was a 4-1 at the Hill Dickinson in November 2025.

Newcastle’s league form has been uneven under Matthias Jaissle. Before last weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace, they had lost heavily at Leeds and Coventry, both 4-1, and then lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa.

We spoke to Mark Betham from Newcastle's Roundtable before the cup tie to get a Newcastle perspective on Jaissle, their start to the season and Monday’s game.

How would you describe Jaissle’s style, for those who haven’t seen much?

“His style is about getting the ball forward as fast as possible with punishments in training for anyone doing sideways passing. It’s fast, front-footed and aggressive in its pressing.”

That approach was clear on Thursday, but Everton punished it. Newcastle pushed hard after half-time, and Barry’s goal settled the tie before their pressure produced anything more than Dan Burn’s late consolation.

It seems an inconsistent start to the season. Are Newcastle fans satisfied or are they expecting more?

“Most Newcastle fans understand it has been a massive overhaul this summer and that it will take time, but will back Jaissle.”

What is an area of weakness where you think Everton could hurt Newcastle?

“Our midfield has been a weakness due to our desire to push forward, leaving gaps in midfield.”

This is where Monday could be decided. When Newcastle’s midfielders join the press, space opens behind them. Garner and Hackney both scored on Thursday by arriving from deep. If Everton can play through the first wave of pressure, the gaps should be there again.

If you had to take one Everton player into Newcastle’s starting XI, who would you pick?

“If I had to pick one, it would be Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. He’s clever with his feet, controls the midfield and has a good finish on him.”

Dewsbury-Hall supplied the assist for Barry’s winner at St James’ Park in February. Against a side that leaves space in midfield, his passing could be one of Everton’s main threats again.
