Xabi Alonso praises Estevao and Lavia after Chelsea victory over Man Utd

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised Estevao Willian and Romeo Lavia following Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer secured three important points for the Blues, who moved back into the top four after a difficult week.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was also dismissed after receiving two yellow cards, leaving the visitors with little hope of mounting a comeback.

Speaking after the match, Alonso admitted that Chelsea had struggled to establish control during an evenly contested first half.

However, the Spaniard revealed that his half-time instructions focused on improving possession and reducing unnecessary mistakes.

“We have spoken at half-time that we’re going to win this game with the ball,” Alonso explained.

The changes produced an improved second-half performance, with Chelsea taking the lead before Palmer doubled their advantage.

Alonso reserved particular praise for Estevao, who was handed a rare starting opportunity after struggling for regular minutes this season.

The Brazilian teenager had previously started only two matches under the Chelsea manager, both in the Carabao Cup.

Alonso revealed that he had informed Estevao of his selection following the Tottenham match, allowing the winger time to prepare.

“He has had the best response to show that he deserves more,” the Chelsea boss said.

The 19-year-old impressed with his attacking movement and creativity, coming close to scoring while developing a strong connection with the Stamford Bridge crowd.

Alonso also highlighted Lavia’s outstanding midfield performance after the Belgian completed another demanding match despite his previous injury problems.

The midfielder started because Jordan Henderson was unwell, having already played extensively against Liverpool in midweek.

“For me it has been a top, top performance,” Alonso said, praising Lavia’s passing, decision-making and ability to connect defence with attack.

The Chelsea manager believes the 22-year-old is gradually regaining confidence and physical strength after several injury-disrupted periods.

Goalkeeper Mike Penders also received praise for another composed display and a second clean sheet in three appearances.

Alonso believes the youngster has responded positively to a recent mistake, describing the experience as an important part of his development.

Chelsea’s victory was particularly encouraging given the absence of Joao Pedro and the need to use Pedro Neto in an unfamiliar attacking role.

The result provides a timely boost for Alonso, whose side responded to their midweek Carabao Cup elimination against Liverpool with an important league victory.

With Estevao pushing for more opportunities and Lavia returning to his best, Chelsea have further reasons for optimism heading into November.
