David Moyes believes his Everton team face a very different challenge on Monday night as they face Newcastle United for the second time in five days.

The two sides tackle each other in a Premier League clash at St James’ Park having met in what was the previous fixture for them both at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday when the Blues triumphed 3-1 in a Carabao Cup fourth round tie. The victory, achieved through goals by James Garner, Hayden Hackney – his first for the club – and Thierno Barry, secured a quarter-final trip to Fleetwood Town with the League Two outfit having stunned reigning Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties in the previous round.

Despite a chaotic end to the summer transfer window that left them with a squad of just 18 outfield players, with solitary options in the striker, right-back and left-back positions, Everton went unbeaten for their first eight matches in all competitions this season. However, back-to-back Premier League defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal (both 2-0) saw them drop from fifth to the bottom half of the table.

In contrast, the Magpies triumphed in their last Premier League game, 2-0 at Crystal Palace. However, The Blues have now beaten the Tyneside outfit on this occasions this calendar year – 3-2 in a Premier League game at St James’ Park on February 28; 3-1 in a pre-season friendly at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, on August 12; and the aforementioned success on October 29, so they are now looking to complete a quartet.

However, Moyes said: “It’s a different ballgame go to St James’ Park on a Monday evening and you know, they’ve got a great crowd up there. So, you always know you’re up against it.

“But we’ll go with confidence. We’ve played Newcastle a couple times this year and done well, so we have to try and continue it.

“Newcastle have got some really, really good players. Players you need to concern yourself about.

“Newcastle brought a fantastic support down here and I’ve got no doubt the Everton supporters will do the same. It’s a tough game, Monday night games are never easy as well, but looking forward to it now.”
