Man City midfielder Enzo Fernandez is keen to return to his first club, River Plate, before the end of his career.
The Argentinian international only moved to the Etihad from Chelsea at the start of September, but he has expressed his desire to go back and play in Buenos Aires:
“I want to return to River at some point; I’ve said it several times. I’m going to return; I’m sure of it. It’s something I really want. I stand by my words and what’s on record.”
“If I say it, it’s because I feel it and because I know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did. Today, I’m here with a long contract at Manchester City. There’s still a long way to go, but it will happen.”
Fernandez played 53 first-team games for River Plate
The midfielder won the league title with the Argentinian club back in 2021, although it was around the time of the Covid pandemic.
For that reason, you can understand why he would want to return and perform in front of the home crowd before his career is over. As he mentions, though, that could be a “long way” in the future.

Man City fans will hope he has a long career at the Etihad
Fernandez has had a rather unspectacular start to life in Manchester, having scored 1 goal and provided 1 assist in 11 appearances. Considering he managed 15 goals and 7 assists for Chelsea last season, it doesn’t look like he will be as prolific in front of goal for his new team.
Of course, the 25-year-old is playing in a slightly deeper role, and it may also take time for him to adapt to his new surroundings, but supporters will hope to see the best of their club record signing very soon.
