Crystal Palace will still be able to net at least £60million if they sell key midfielder Adam Wharton next season.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the 22-year-old’s valuation has not dropped hugely despite him being discussed as a £100m asset in the last window.

The Eagles have faced interest in Wharton on several occasions in recent years, and his form is now under major scrutiny at the start of the new campaign.

However, Wyness believes that Palace will have no regrets about not selling Wharton when his stock was at its highest, and does not foresee a major dip in his value.

The youngster has started all eight league games for the South London outfit so far this term, despite their struggles under new manager Pierre Sage.

Wharton has been under fire from some sections of the fanbase in recent weeks, presenting the England international with a new challenge to work his way through.

Crystal Palace to assess Adam Wharton’s future

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Palace will “revisit” Wharton’s future at the end of the season and see how he has progressed.

“I think regret is premature right now. Wharton is a quality player who can come good. There are a lot of factors around Palace right now, as we know that the feeling can't be great internally just now,” he said.

“That affects all players and hits their form. People who know football will understand Wharton has got the talent and he's got the tools to be a quality player.

“I think you revisit in the summer, see how the season has gone, I think that the worst you could say is he’d go for between £60m and £80m.

“I don't think it'll be that big a drop because there'll be a market for Wharton at some stage. And if he does go well again in the second half of the season and Palace pick up some form, then of course £80m is very much a realistic valuation.”

Instead, sources say that ex-Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is the “strong favourite” to take the reins if the club hierarchy decide to make a change.

Sage is under huge pressure at Palace right now, but is set to remain in charge for this weekend’s trip to Tottenham.
