Newcastle United are one of several Premier League clubs “keeping tabs” on Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Magpies, Manchester United and Everton have all taken note of the Nigerian international’s form this season.

Bassey’s contract does expire at the end of the season, although Fulham do have an option to extend it for another year, which means they can keep hold of him until the summer of 2028.

Even with that clause being in place, though, it is believed the Cottagers are hoping that he will sign a longer extension and end any speculation about his future.

Why are Newcastle interested in the defender?

Sporting director Ross Wilson will soon be looking to strengthen the middle of defence, with Fabian Schar and Dan Burn both nearing the end of their contracts.

Like Burn, Bassey can cover two positions, centre-back and left-back, and that may be why the 26-year-old features prominently on Wilson’s shortlist.

Bassey is not the only centre-back being watched

Several centre-halves have been linked with moves to St James’ Park in recent months. Ajax’s Aaron Bouwman is thought to be on Wilson’s watchlist.

Giorgio Scalvini is a long-term target for the club, while there have been reports of interest in Gremio’s Wallace.

Bassey is the only of the four with Premier League experience, though, and that means he would not need any time to adapt if he were to make the switch to the North East in the New Year.
