Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal: Havertz’s strike ends Gunners’winless run at Anfield

Arsenal claimed a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The north London side have now ended their 13-game winless run at Anfield and move three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the standings.

Kai Havertz put Arsenal ahead in the 16th minute, tapping Declan Rice’s low cross into the net at the far post.

Alexander Isak should have restored parity when Bradley Barcola delivered a brilliant cross into the area, but he failed to connect cleanly.

Havertz almost doubled the defending champions’ lead, running across to tap a cross into the net. However, this time, he was fractionally late.

At the other end, David Raya denied Isak from finding the back of the net following a dangerous cross into the six-yard box.

Florian Wirtz then struck the woodwork with a free-kick from inside the area as the Reds continued their search for the equaliser.

Alexis Mac Allister fluffed a chance to restore parity before half-time, heading over the bar from close range.

The second half began scrappily, with neither side creating a clear-cut chance in the opening stages.

The hosts looked to have created a good opportunity when Milos Kerkez threaded a pass to Isak, who disappointingly shot over.

After playing on the back foot since taking the lead, Arsenal began to control possession.

Alisson Becker made a brilliant save to deny Christos Tzolis from doubling the Gunners’ advantage, parrying the forward’s curling effort away.

Liverpool finished strongly but were unable to break down a resolute Arsenal defence, allowing the visitors to secure all three points and handing Mikel Arteta his first managerial win at Anfield.
