The Gunners looked to frustrate the hosts and did exactly that, often delaying the restart as they attempted to protect their narrow lead.

Arsenal would ultimately see the game out, securing their first win at Anfield in over 14 years.

Football Insider has picked out four of Madley's biggest blunders on the day.

Alexander Isak denied penalty

With Liverpool 1-0 down and chasing the equaliser, they were presented with an opportunity to put the ball in the box.

The Swede did not go down, raise his arms or seem to make any complaint at all to the referee, likely saving Arsenal from a certain penalty.

Yet Madley's job as a referee to spot incidents exactly like that, and he should have pointed to the spot. VAR deserves the majority of the criticism, but this was a potentially game-changing error.

Madueke and Timber took issue, and a square-up between Mac Allister and the former saw a small touch of the heads and the midfielder throw himself down in a heap.

However you view it, Madley lost control of the incident and let it get far out of hand, wasting time as Liverpool chased the game.

Jurrien Timber penalised for winning the ball

One other big moment between Timber and Isak took place in the first half, but it has not received the same attention.

A scuffle just outside of the box saw the right-back dive into a tackle on the Liverpool striker, with Madley blowing his whistle.

Florian Wirtz took the free-kick and crashed it against the bar, with David Raya unable to get anywhere near it.

Replays showed that Timber's tackle had been clean and all ball - there undoubtedly would have been an inquest had Liverpool scored.

Madley misses blatant touch

With Liverpool's pressure increasing and Arsenal struggling to get out, a rare surge forward saw the ball fall to Bruno Guimaraes on the edge of the box.

The Brazilian struck for goal and came close to finding Havertz, who was sliding in.

But both Guimaraes and Arsenal appeared mystified when Madley pointed for a goal-kick, clearly having missed Virgil van Dijk's blatant touch.

In that moment, a corner could well have been vital for changing the momentum - the Gunners will be glad it did not ultimately affect the score line.
