Andy Madley never should have been appointed to officiate the heavyweight clash between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the referee had far from his best display on Sunday, 1 November.

Both sets of supporters left the stadium frustrated by Madley's performance in the middle of the park, but the Gunners will be much happier with the result.

The Reds undoubtedly should have been awarded a penalty after Jurrien Timber tugged Alexander Isak's shirt, stopping him from heading home.

Arsenal's No.12 could have even been sent off for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity, in one of many contentious moments on the pitch.

Andy Madley 'ain't got a game' if I'm in charge

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett expressed his surprise at the original appointment, and called for the official to be suspended for the next round of fixtures.

"We have elite referees within the group. We have a pecking order, and those referees that are in form should get this game.

"There are going to be knocks on the door saying, 'Boss, why haven't I got a game?' And I would be saying, 'You need to improve your performance and be more consistent'.

"I don't think he had his best game, and I don't know what his best game is. We've highlighted a number of ifs, and I've highlighted one that is 100 per cent incorrect.

"That says to me, next week if I was doing the appointments, he ain't got a game."

Liverpool vs Arsenal turns ugly at Anfield

It wasn't just the fans who were frustrated. Emotions bubbled over on the pitch, with Virgil van Dijk letting his feelings be known at full-time.

And Andoni Iraola revealed how dumbfounded he was at the penalty decision, stating that next time he wants Isak to dive for the spot-kick.

After watching replays of the incident, it was laughable from the Liverpool midfielder, and he was rightly cautioned while Madueke escaped altogether.
