The 20-year-old's current terms will expire in 2029, with clubs across Europe ready to pounce if he decides against committing his future to Stamford Bridge.

The England youth international was exceptional on Saturday as the Blues beat Manchester United 2-0, having started at right-back.

Josh Acheampong 'can play anywhere'

Acheampong made his breakthrough in the 2024-25 campaign, and made 31 appearances across all competitions last season.

"He played well at the weekend. He's only 20, and he can play right back, centre-half, left back," King told Football Insider.

"He can play anywhere. I think if he's going to sign a new deal, it'll be in the new year. I think he's come in and he's shown what he can do.

"Now, if he could do that for 15 matches, because I can imagine he's on good money anyway, but if he can come in now and show that he can do this job regularly at all levels, then without doubt, he's a very versatile footballer.

"He can play anywhere across the backcourt, even as a holding midfield player. And it's always good a football club to have a young player who looks more mature than he is, actually.

Acheampong's startling stats vs Man United

If Chelsea needed any more of a reason to hand Acheampong a new deal, Saturday's display was evidence enough.

He hit 12 line-breaking passes, eight into the final third, completed a dribble and was not dispossessed once.

Defensively, Acheampong made four tackles, two blocks, one interception and a brilliant 10 recoveries, having also cleared one off the line.
