Barcelona boss Hansi Flick provides injury update ahead of Aston Villa clash

It is still only the start of the 2026-27 season, but injuries are already causing a lot of problems for FC Barcelona. The Catalans have already seen several important players miss game time due to physical problems, while some of these players are still recovering from their injuries.

The defense has been the most affected area and the German coach is currently left with very few options for the backline. In fact, [he had to play two midfielders, Frenkie de Jong and Brian Farinas, as center-backs](https://barcanewsnetwork.com/official-barcelona-name-starting-xi-for-deportivo-alaves-clash-la-liga/) in the last game against Alaves. Furthermore, Dani Olmo is also out with an injury, as is the forward Roony Bardghji.

One piece of good news in this regard came a few days back, when Andreas Christensen returned to train with his teammates. As [Mundo Deportivo](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20261102/1004246232/flick-desvela-plazos-recuperar-lesionados.html) has reported, the Barcelona head coach was asked about the situation of all these recovering players in the press conference ahead of the match against Aston Villa. Talking about Christensen, the German coach revealed:

**“We have to wait. Yesterday, he only took part in a possession exercise, acting as a neutral player. It’s a step forward, but we have to wait until the weekend.”**

On the other hand, he did not have any good news to share about the rest of the injured players:

**“We are without Xavi Espart, Eric, Christensen and Koundé. When you look at the quality of these players in defence, it is understandable that managing the situation is not easy.”**

**“I hope everyone will be available after the international break, including Dani Olmo. We might see Xavi Espart next year, in the first match. I think the others will return, and the situation will be different.”**

Frenkie de Jong and Brian Farinas were able to hold the line against Alaves, but it remains to be seen whether Hansi Flick will once again have to rely on these options as his Barcelona team takes on the Premier League side Aston Villa in their next match.
