The 26-year-old is under contract until 2034 but will await the outcome of the 114 guilty verdicts in charges of breaching the Premier League's financial rules that remain hanging over the Etihad Stadium.
It is thought that the Citizens will be made an example of, with relegation, expulsion from the Premier League and transfer bans all on the table.
While Haaland's exit is not guaranteed, it is unlikely that the mega talent will be happy to spend even a year in the lower leagues.
'Arsenal would be the team in England that could afford him'
In an interview following Man City's 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday, Haaland's father, Alf-Inge, cooled talk of his son leaving.
"What would happen if Manchester City were to get relegated or down to a lower league? That would put pressure on certain players," King told Football Insider.
"And I would imagine the agents of certain players would want to know exactly what the position is. But then, who can afford Erling Haaland? I've got four clubs who could afford him.
"The two Spanish clubs, who get backed hugely by the government as well. As we've known in the past when Real Madrid and Barcelona have got into financial problems, it's been the banks and the government that have sorted them out because they're so central in promoting Spain and Spanish football.
"I feel also that they proved it once, that they paid over £100million for a footballer, and I think if Erling Haaland became available, Arsenal would be the team in England that would be able to take him."
What did Haaland say?
Haaland has enjoyed several battles against Arsenal in the recent years, with his wars against Gabriel always especially gritty.
"I think we should await the appeal process. It could happen quickly, even though there are rival supporters, clubs, and not least journalists who are out for blood against City right now," Haaland's father said on Saturday.
"So we’ll just have to wait and see what the appeal outcome says. City believe they have strong evidence to stand up and prove their innocence, so I think we wait until that decision is reached.”
