Clubs often revisit targets when a player’s form and versatility continue to stand out in another league. Long-term interest can stay active even when immediate windows look difficult because of contract length and the selling club’s position. Competition from several sides usually pushes any realistic deal further into the future.

Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Alex Baena’s rise with Atletico Madrid as Mikel Arteta considers a move for the player in 2027. Sources have told TEAMtalk that hopes of a January raid are likely to be put on hold because of heavy competition and Atletico’s stance.

The 25-year-old Spain international joined Atletico from Villarreal in the summer of 2025 and has made a strong start this season, attracting interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Baena has nine goal contributions – five goals and four assists – from 14 appearances so far this season. That takes his career total to 92 goals and assists from 253 games. He is primarily a left-sided forward who can also play centrally or as a makeshift number nine. Atletico paid €45 million for him and tied him to a contract until 2030, which gives them a strong negotiating position.

Arsenal’s interest dates back to his time at Villarreal. Sources say Arteta’s side see him as a versatile option to add depth to their attacking options. Atletico are understood to be very unwilling to allow a mid-season sale. Any move is considered far more realistic next summer and would almost certainly require a fee well above Baena’s current valuation. Sources say it will take at least €80 million (£67 million).

The Gunners allowed two left-sided options to leave in the summer in Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, and signed only Christos Tzolis as a replacement. With Eberechi Eze largely not impressing when used on that side, Arteta is open to the idea of another high-quality option on the left of the attack.

Bayern Munich have been described as seriously interested. Tottenham also have Baena listed as an option, although they would likely prioritise an out-and-out striker. Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa have monitored the situation in recent months. Despite the growing list of interested clubs, Atletico have made clear that Baena forms part of Diego Simeone’s longer-term plans.

The La Liga side are not expected to entertain offers in January unless what sources describe as an exceptional bid arrives. With just under four years left on his contract and no pressing need to sell, Atletico hold the upper hand. Baena’s versatility, international pedigree and current form mean he is likely to remain on the radar of several top clubs as the season continues.
