Chelsea Have Option To Cut Highly-Rated Teenager's Loan Short In January Amid Struggles For Minutes

Jesse Derry is reported to be keen to succeed at Sporting, but Chelsea could terminate his loan deal early if the situation does not improve.

Chelsea could decide to recall Jesse Derry early from his loan spell at Sporting CP amid the young winger’s struggles for minutes in Portugal.

The 19-year-old joined Sporting on a season-long loan in early July, a move seen as exciting for the young winger. Sporting are a top side in Portugal, which usually offers more opportunities for attacking players to thrive, and they compete in the Champions League.

Unfortunately, it is safe to say Derry has not had the best start to his loan spell.

He has played 133 minutes for Sporting so far and earned his first start last weekend, in a 2-1 win over Maritimo in the Allianz Cup (Taça da Liga). To be fair, it was not a bad full debut. He had a goal disallowed for offside, was very close to scoring a direct free kick that hit the post, and still provided an assist from a corner kick.

Still, aside from the impressive cup start, he has made only four substitute appearances in Liga Portugal and two more in the Champions League, which were mostly late-game cameos.

Fellow 19-year-old Flavio Goncalves and summer signing Nestory Irankunda seem to be both ahead of Derry in the pecking order in his preferred left winger role, while on the right, Sporting have Geny Catamo and the versatile Luis Guilherme.

It makes sense for Sporting to prioritise developing their own players over a loanee, but obviously, from Chelsea’s perspective, this is far from ideal.

According to The Athletic, there is a break clause that can be activated in January if Chelsea decide to cut the loan short. However, as it stands, Derry is said to be determined to make his loan spell in Portugal a success.

There has also been a massive change at Sporting, the surprise sacking of head coach Rui Borges, that could work in Derry’s favour.

Borges’ tenure ended after an inconsistent start to the season, with Sporting sitting third in Liga Portugal, nine points behind league leaders Porto after 10 games. Tiago Fernandes has taken charge on an interim basis, but Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca has been touted as Sporting’s next head coach.

For now, Fernandes will remain in charge of the team for Sporting’s upcoming Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night. This will be Derry’s return to Stamford Bridge, so he will certainly hope to be involved.

“Jesse Derry is a talented young player with a lot of potential,” Sporting interim boss Fernandes said recently about Derry.

“He has benefited from the opportunity to develop at a big club like Sporting. He has not yet had as much competitive playing time as he would have liked, but he is eager to learn and improve.

“He will continue to work hard for his opportunity and, when it comes, he will certainly make the most of it.”

The next two months will now likely determine whether Derry, who signed a new Chelsea contract until 2032 before joining Sporting, will spend the rest of the season in the Portuguese capital.
