Chelsea are expected to decide whether or not to offer Josh Acheampong a new contract in the new year, with a number of clubs reportedly keeping an eye on the 20-year-old defender. Any new deal will more likely be offered after the turn of the year. However, a few clubs definitely want him, thanks to his impressive output for the West Londoners.
Acheampong put in a stellar performance in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31. The academy product started at right-back and made four tackles, two blocks and ten recoveries, as well as one clearance off the line. He also completed 60 of his 65 passes, including 12 line-breaking passes.
He can play as a right-back, centre-back, left-back and can even play as a defensive midfielder. He has also played every minute of Chelsea’s last five games in all competitions under Xabi Alonso. Acheampong is currently contracted to the club until June 2029. However, he will enter the last two years of his contract next summer. There are concerns that he will end up leaving the club as Trevoh Chalobah did, and the Blues would be smart to ensure they tie him down for longer.
Reports from last month revealed that there are no active negotiations over a new deal for Acheampong. However, the Blues turned down a summer enquiry from Manchester United, having declared him untouchable. Acheampong is expected to start for Alonso against Sunderland on Sunday.
Daniel Sturridge Praises Josh Acheampong as a Baller
Former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge was impressed by Acheampong’s performance against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Taking to X as the game drew to a close, the ex-England forward described the defender as a baller and highlighted that he is only 20.
Sturridge went further by tipping the youngster to reach elite level, adding that he loves the way he plays in the modern defensive role.
This is a big compliment, seeing as Sturridge scored 13 league goals in 63 games for Chelsea between 2009 and 2013. Acheampong’s rise under Alonso has been impressive, even though he played only 663 minutes in the Premier League last season.
