Barcelona explore January move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié

The Ecuador international has emerged as a possible target as Barcelona look to strengthen their defence during the winter transfer window.

Hincapié, 24, joined Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen and offers the versatility being sought by head coach Hansi Flick. The left-footed defender can operate at centre-back or left-back, giving Barcelona another option across the back line.

His opportunities in north London have been limited this season, with injuries and competition for places restricting his involvement in Mikel Arteta's plans.

According to [_Sport_](https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/barca/hincapie-central-top-lista-deco-136039666), Deco has already approached the player's representatives to establish whether he would be open to a move and to explore the possibility of an agreement in January.

Hincapié's profile is understood to appeal to both the sporting director and Flick, who are assessing several options as they seek defensive reinforcements.

The potential deal would nevertheless be complicated by Arsenal's position. Although Hincapié has not established himself as a regular starter, Arteta is reluctant to lose players during the season, particularly with the club competing across several competitions.

The Gunners are also unlikely to welcome the prospect of weakening their defensive options midway through the campaign, meaning Barcelona would need to find a solution acceptable to the English club.

Hincapié is not the only defender under consideration at Camp Nou. Barcelona have also been linked with Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, who remains among the names being discussed by the club's recruitment department.

The interest in Hincapié is currently at the exploratory stage, with no formal offer reported. Deco is continuing to assess the market before Barcelona decide which defensive target to pursue.

His ability to cover two positions makes him an attractive option for Flick, but any January move will depend on Arsenal's willingness to negotiate and the financial terms of a potential deal.
