Tottenham have plenty to address after an expensive summer, but their recruitment team continues to monitor young talent abroad. Roberto De Zerbi needs consistent performances from his existing squad, particularly as Spurs have collected 12 points from 9 Premier League matches at the time of writing.
The north London club have scored 10 goals and conceded 10 in the league this season. However, their recent 2-0 victory away to Chelsea offered encouragement serious encouragement to the Italian manager as it was only the 2nd Spurs victory at Stamford Bridge in their last 36 meetings in West London.
Spurs were by far the best team that day and new signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes were both superb with the latter being the clear man of the match. The following game which was a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace gave Spurs 3 wins in a row giving De Zerbi a timely boost ahead of the international break and moving the club into the top half of the table in 9th as you can see below. Spurs now need to build on results with their recruitment decisions supporting the immediate push for greater consistency.
Their summer spending reportedly reached £311.5 million, bringing Sandro Tonali, Sávio and Mateus Fernandes into the squad. James Maddison, Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel provide further attacking options, leaving considerable competition for creative positions and raising questions about the need for another attacking prospect.
Against that backdrop, Tottenham have reportedly identified an emerging Argentine midfielder whose versatility could appeal to De Zerbi, although his arrival would represent a long-term investment rather than an immediate solution.
Tottenham approach River Plate for 18-year-old prospect
According to Sport Witness, which relayed reports from Argentine outlets El Intransigente and Soy Del Millo, Tottenham have approached River Plate over Lautaro Pereyra.
The 18-year-old has recorded one goal and one assist across 15 senior appearances. River manager Leonardo Ponzio has deployed the right-footed youngster as an attacking midfielder, across the front line and at left wing-back, highlighting the positional flexibility that could suit De Zerbi’s system.
River moved quickly to protect their asset. Pereyra signed a contract extension on October 26, keeping him at the Argentine club until December 2029. The agreement reportedly includes a €100 million release clause, worth approximately £87 million.
Transfermarkt valued the teenager at around £610,000 in September, illustrating the gap between his current valuation and River’s release clause. However, that figure does not automatically determine his eventual transfer fee, since interested clubs could negotiate directly with River president Stefano Di Carlo.
Should Tottenham pursue Pereyra despite their existing attacking depth?
Tottenham should consider this move only if River accept a sensible fee and Spurs establish a clear development plan. Their immediate concern remains improving league consistency, so another teenage creator cannot take priority over strengthening areas that currently undermine their results.
Pereyra’s versatility suits De Zerbi’s positional approach, but potential alone cannot justify an £87 million commitment. A lower-cost agreement followed by a loan would offer a more sensible route, provided River entertain negotiations and the player receives a clear development pathway.
Spurs have already invested heavily in first-team recruitment. Spending another substantial sum on an unproven prospect would risk diverting resources from defensive improvements or perhaps on a proven elite goalscorer to finish off the many chances they are creating..
Their recruitment hierarchy must balance immediate needs with opportunities to acquire exceptional young talent. Pereyra could become a valuable long-term asset, but Tottenham should pursue him only on terms that protect their budget and give the teenager a realistic route into senior football.
Who are Spurs facing in their upcoming games?
With Spurs facing several clubs in the bottom half of the league and many struggling like bottom of the table Sunderland, Fulham and fellow strugglers Ipswich there is an opportunity for De Zerbi to move the club up into the top 6 and above.
Leeds United have been decent sitting in 7th place but Spurs really face their sternest test of the 5 games in the North London derby on December 2nd at home. Still it all bodes well and the club looking at talented youngsters to add to the squad is a positive sign as the will find attracting talents like Lautaro Pereyra much easier.
