The board at La Liga giants Barcelona have turned their gaze towards the Italian market, amid an ongoing search for a new centre-forward. This comes amid the understanding that the Blaugrana have earmarked Monza star Gustavo Varela as a potential future addition.
Frontman Varela is for his part in the midst of something of a breakout campaign.
Since taking his talents to Serie A outfit Monza from Benfica over the summer, the 21-year-old has gone on to light up the Italian football landscape.
Across nine league appearances to date, Varela has found the net nine times, chipping in with a further pair of goals in the cup, too.
Along the way, the young frontman is understood to have garnered a whole host of admirers, including Premier League champions Arsenal. And as alluded to above, also closely monitoring Varela’s development at present are those behind the scenes at Barcelona.
As per a report from Diario Sport, citing Portuguese outlet A Bola:
‘Barça have joined the list of teams that are closely following the evolution of the attacker. For now, though, there is no formal offer.’
