Barcelona have identified three defensive targets as they assess their options ahead of the January transfer window, with Arthur Dias, Vitor Reis and Youri Baas emerging as names under consideration, according to a report from SPORT.

It is known that Barcelona’s recruitment priority is a left-footed centre-back who can strengthen Hansi Flick’s defence without requiring a major financial commitment.

The club wants a player capable of contributing during the second half of the season and, at the same time, must bring the much-needed versatility to the squad.

However, their limited financial flexibility means recruitment is likely to depend on departures.

Arthur Dias of Athletico Paranaense is one of the younger defenders being monitored.

The Brazilian has expressed his ambition to move to European football, but Barcelona would need to consider an investment of at least €12 million.

Furthermore, Vitor Reis is a familiar name to Barcelona’s recruitment department.

The Catalans followed the Brazilian before Manchester City secured his transfer, and he has now returned to their radar as they revisit the market for a left-footed centre-back.

Reis offers a different profile from Dias, having already moved to Europe and gained experience within Manchester City’s system.

His availability, however, would depend on City’s plans and whether a suitable arrangement could be negotiated.

Furthermore, Youri Baas is the newest name among the three options.

The 23-year-old Ajax defender has attracted Barcelona’s attention because he can operate both as a centre-back and left-back, giving Flick another tactical option across the defensive line.

That flexibility is particularly relevant to Barcelona’s search because profiles like these give Flick more than one option for all defensive positions.

Baas is therefore an interesting candidate, although it is crucial to note that there is nothing advanced and Barcelona are merely tracking the player.

As such, Barcelona are simultaneously assessing their full-back options, but strengthening multiple defensive positions would be difficult without significant departures.

The left-back has previously attracted interest from other clubs, and reports have raised questions about his position in Flick’s plans.

Although his departure is not certain, Barcelona will certainly not stand in his way if there is a strong offer on the table.
