Barcelona’s pursuit of Ruud Nijstad has received a significant boost after FC Twente technical director Erik ten Hag publicly confirmed that the Catalan club are among several European heavyweights monitoring the 18-year-old defender.
Nijstad has emerged as one of the most promising young centre-backs in Dutch football, attracting attention from Barcelona, among other suitors.
Speaking about the growing interest, Ten Hag acknowledged that several leading clubs have already made enquiries.
‘’Indeed, there is interest in him. Some of Europe’s top eight clubs have enquired about him,” he said, and Barça is one of them, as per SPORT.
Nijstad was a serious target for Barcelona last summer as the club assessed options to strengthen its central defence.

The Catalans made an approach, but Twente refused to sanction his departure, while the defender ultimately remained in the Netherlands to continue his development.
Ten Hag praised that decision, saying: “It’s admirable that he has made a conscious decision to stay at Twente for another year. It will work out well for everyone.”
The teenager has since continued to establish himself in Twente’s first team. His contract runs until 2029, giving the Dutch club a strong negotiating position as interest in his services increases.
Although Ten Hag welcomed Nijstad’s decision to stay, he also recognised the financial realities facing Dutch clubs.
Maintaining competitiveness in European football requires regular player sales, and Twente are no exception.

“All clubs in the Netherlands have to sell players every year. To remain competitive in Europe, you need a certain budget.
“And to guarantee that, you simply have to sell.”
The defender’s growing reputation has pushed his valuation beyond €20 million, with Twente hoping to demand close to twice that amount if Premier League clubs become serious contenders.
That would be a considerable investment in an 18-year-old, particularly for Barcelona, who are indeed looking for a new defender.
However, what works in Barcelona’s favour is their lucrative sporting direction. Sure, they cannot compete with the financial prowess of the Premier League teams, but they can offer a systematic development plan.
