Liga F’s basement side Valencia celebrated their first win of the Liga F season on match-day 9. Yasmin Mrabet’s brace proved decisive as 10-player Valencia saw off Eibar by a 2-1 scoreline in a dramatic contest.

Here, we will round up all the action from Liga F match-day 9.

Valencia claim first win in thrilling encounter

After suffering eight consecutive defeats, newly-promoted Valencia finally recorded their maiden win of the season in their home meeting with Eibar. The basement side were forced to come from behind after Sara Martín broke the deadlock in the first minute of the second period. Spotting Alice Pinguet, Martín sent her spectacular long-range shot looping over the goalkeeper’s head and into the awaiting net.

However, Eibar’s lead lasted less than 10 minutes as Yasmin Mrabet soon headed Valencia level from a deep free-kick. The momentum appeared to turn back in the visitors’ favour when Gema Climent was sent off for kicking out and throwing Carla Andres to the floor. But to Valencia’s credit, they completed the turnaround despite being left with a numerical disadvantage.

Similar to her first goal, Mrabet got her head to a lofted free-kick, knocking it past the goalkeeper who had attempted to reach the ball before the Morocco international.

Mrabet’s joy of scoring a brace was nearly dampened when she gave away a late penalty. But fortunately for the 27-year-old, Carmen Álvarez thumped her spot-kick against the post, ensuring Valencia could celebrate three much-needed points.

Real Madrid leave it late against Sevilla

Real Madrid were on course to experience a frustrating outing in Andalusia after Sevilla’s Xenia Barrios cancelled out Felicia Schröder’s opener. The winger drove down the left flank and then inside to open up the angle for a composed strike out of Merle Frohms’s reach.

Level at the break, Real Madrid had to remain patient until two substitutes made the difference in the closing stages. Arianna Caruso pounced on a loose ball to fire Las Blancas back in front in the 86th minute. Just moments later, Caruso’s fellow substitute, Lineth Beerensteyn, drove her left-foot shot into the bottom corner to wrap up Real Madrid’s seventh league win of the season, keeping them within two points of the summit.

Kerolin nets double for Barcelona

Barcelona eased to a 4-0 victory in their away clash against Badalona. Kerolin put the visitors in front inside the opening five minutes, cleverly rounding the goalkeeper to slot into the empty net. Barcelona’s dominance in the contest grew dramatically when Lucía Martínez was sent off for pulling back Carla Julià in front of goal, allowing Caroline Graham Hansen the chance to double the lead from a 61st-minute penalty. Kerolin went on to seal her brace before Clàudia Pina rounded off the win with her 10th Liga F goal of the season.

Madrid CFF move into third spot as Atlético drop points

Madrid CFF fought back from a goal down to claim the spoils in their home meeting with Deportivo A Coruña. Marísa García put the visitors ahead with a superb hooked finish from Olaya Rodríguez’s bouncing cross. The effort sent Dépor into the break with a narrow lead, but that advantage was gone within a minute of the restart. Emilie Holt was left with a simple finish from close range after Hasnath Ubamba’s cross had been deflected off the post.

The hosts completed the turnaround from another rebound in the 82nd minute. This time, substitute Mariana Silva lifted the ball high into the net after Antia Veiga parried Sakina Ouzraoui’s driven shot. The 19-year-old’s maiden Liga F goal fired Madrid CFF into third spot ahead of an almighty test against Barcelona.

Atlético Madrid missed out on a fourth consecutive victory in their away meeting with Granada. The visitors appeared to be heading towards all three points after Rosa Otermín broke the deadlock in the opening stages of the second period. However, Atleti were unable to hold on to their lead as Naiara Sanmartín rescued a point for Granada with an 85th-minute equaliser.

Espanyol, Tenerife prevail on Liga F match-day 9

Espanyol went into the break of their home meeting with Logroño United on level terms after Anita Marcos saw her opener cancelled out by Laura Martínez’s stunning effort from the edge of the box. The hosts restored their advantage inside two minutes of the restart, with Paula Arana diverting the ball in from Ona Baradad’s low cross. The Catalan side stood firm for the remainder of the contest to claim a third consecutive home victory.

Costa Adeje Tenerife scored twice in the second half to record a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club. Natalia Padilla headed in from Aleksandra Zaremba’s cross to put Tenerife in front in the early stages of the second period. Paulina Gramaglia then made sure of the three points with an 89th-minute effort. The win lifted Tenerife up to sixth spot, leaving them one point adrift of Athletic Club in fifth position.

Alavés frustrate Real Sociedad

Elsewhere, Ainhoa Marín headed Real Sociedad into an 18th-minute lead against Deportivo Alavés at Mendizorroza. However, the visitors’ advantage was soon cancelled out by Inés Altamira’s fizzing strike from distance. The defender sent her effort skipping off the turf and beyond Julia Arrula’s despairing dive.

Did you know?

Badalona are yet to score at home in Liga F this season. In fact, they have failed to score in each of their last six home games since beating Atlético Madrid.

Best goal of Liga F match-day 9

Normally, a strike as good as Eibar’s Martín would get the acclaim as our standout strike of the weekend. But that honour has to go to Logroño’s Martínez, who produced a sumptuous half-volley against Espanyol. The combination of the neat control and the sweetly-timed strike makes it the best goal of match-day 9.
