According to an update from SPORT, it has come to light that Barcelona are preparing to strengthen their defence during the January transfer window, with Hansi Flick keen to bring in another centre-back.
The Catalan side is exploring ways to increase their financial flexibility, but their restricted spending capacity means they will have to consider alternative transfer arrangements.
As such, the need for defensive reinforcements has become increasingly apparent following a series of injuries and disappointing results against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
With several months remaining in the campaign, Barcelona are concerned about their ability to maintain defensive depth during a demanding second half of the season, which is why they are thinking of making an emergency signing.
Barcelona’s transfer plans have gained urgency following the problems experienced in recent weeks.
Injuries to Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and then Xavi Espart have disrupted Flick’s defensive options, exposing the lack of reliable alternatives in defence when several first-team players are unavailable.

The consecutive defeats against PSG and Real Madrid have further highlighted those weaknesses, with the coaching staff increasingly aware that the existing defensive resources could become insufficient as the fixture schedule intensifies.
As a result, Barcelona are now working towards finding a centre-back capable of delivering an immediate improvement rather than simply recruiting a prospect for the future.
For now, Financial considerations remain the biggest obstacle to completing a deal.
As previously reported, Barcelona currently have a financial fair play margin of approximately €3–4 million, leaving limited room for another significant commitment.
The club cannot comfortably accommodate an expensive transfer fee alongside the corresponding salary obligations of an established defender.
Consequently, a loan agreement could become an attractive solution, allowing Barcelona to reinforce their squad without assuming the full financial burden of a permanent acquisition immediately.

Departures during January could also improve their position and provide Deco with additional room to negotiate, although Barcelona have not yet settled on a specific candidate or confirmed that a signing will take place.
At present, Barcelona are examining two different recruitment approaches.
The immediate priority is an experienced centre-back who can contribute straight away, particularly given the number of matches awaiting the squad after the winter break.
At the same time, the sporting department continues to monitor younger defenders across the market who would represent long-term investments.
The key condition for any new arrival is that the player must address a genuine weakness and offer Flick a dependable alternative to his existing defensive options.
Ultimately, though, the January decision will depend on financial flexibility, player availability and whether the right opportunity emerges.
