Barcelona are once again walking a financial tightrope as the January transfer window approaches, with the club desperate to bolster Hansi Flick's defensive options. Despite a strong start to the season, injuries and a lack of depth at centre-back have forced sporting director Deco to search for creative solutions in the market.

Tight margins and loan priorities

The Catalan giants are prioritising the arrival of a new central defender this winter, but the club’s precarious financial position means any business must be conducted with extreme caution. The primary objective for the board is to avoid heavy immediate expenditure, mirroring the low-cost negotiations previously seen in pursuits of players like Joao Cancelo.

Ideally, Barca would prefer a loan arrangement with an option to buy, though finding high-quality players available under such terms remains a significant challenge as major European rivals demand straight transfers. According to Sport, the club will only consider a permanent signing if a first-team player is sold first.

Vice-president Ferran Olive recently shed light on the club's current standing during an interview with Cadena SER, noting that while the club is operating under the 1:1 rule, the available margin is razor-thin. Olive explained that the current salary mass surplus is only around 3 to 4 million euros. Even the recent contract extension of Raphinha, which ties the Brazilian to the club until 2030, only provides a marginal relief of less than five million euros. This increase is due to the winger redistributing his current wages over a longer period, but it does little to change the fact that the overall squad cost is rising due to recent sporting success and summer recruitment.

Defensive targets and Premier League competition

One name that has emerged as a potential short-term fix is Lisandro Martinez, who has reportedly faced friction with Manchester United manager Michael Carrick. The Argentine is seen as an ideal left-sided centre-back, but the Red Devils are keen to recoup a fee before his contract expires in June. This complicates matters for Barcelona, who are also keeping a close eye on RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba.

Beyond established stars, Barca are monitoring Dutch prodigy Ruud Nijstad from Twente, though his valuation has already climbed past the €20m mark. The Eredivisie side is reportedly waiting for Premier League clubs to spark a bidding war, which could quickly price the Catalans out of the race.

Given these hurdles, Deco must consider internal sacrifices to generate the necessary funds. Transfer expert Mateo Moretto suggested that selling a high-value asset could solve multiple problems, stating: "Kounde could be one of the pieces with which Barca could gain money to, maybe, sign a centre-forward or another right-back."

Potential high-profile departures

Jules Kounde finds himself in a vulnerable position despite his versatility. The Frenchman has struggled for consistent starts recently, seeing the likes of Eric Garcia and Xavi Espart preferred in certain rotations. Chelsea, who missed out on Kounde when he left Sevilla for 60 million euros, remain attentive to his situation, while Bayern Munich could also reignite their interest in January. If the defender's prominence in Flick's plans does not increase, both the club and the player may decide that a parting of ways is the most logical step to facilitate a broader defensive overhaul and provide the manager with more specific tools.

Alejandro Balde is another homegrown star whose future is currently shrouded in uncertainty. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is reportedly exploring various projects across Europe to ensure the young left-back regains a starring role. A loan with a mandatory purchase option is considered the most viable exit strategy, with Premier League sides Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Tottenham all showing interest. Juventus and Roma have also held preliminary meetings regarding the defender. For Barcelona, a significant sale of an academy product would represent pure profit on the balance sheet, providing the financial oxygen needed to finally secure Flick’s priority targets.

I began my journalism career in 2011, initially specializing in investigative reporting. This experience allowed me to explore different fields in depth, develop strong analytical skills, and build a solid foundation in journalism. Eventually, I decided to pursue my first passion: football. I went on to cover the Egyptian national teams across all age groups, while expanding my coverage to include the global game and its biggest stories.

My passion for football began on the pitch, where I played for the youth teams of several Egyptian clubs. That early experience shaped my understanding of the game and fueled my desire to follow football at every level. My journey as a fan of the global game dates back to the 1998 FIFA World Cup, alongside a deep-rooted interest in Egyptian domestic football. However, my connection with the game has never been limited to watching matches on television. I have consistently followed my favorite team, Zamalek, from the stands, experiencing the atmosphere, emotions, and intensity of Egyptian football firsthand. As one of the most successful clubs of the 20th century, Zamalek holds a special place in my football journey.

On the European stage, AC Milan has always been my favorite club, largely because of my admiration for legendary players such as George Weah, Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Kaká, Andrea Pirlo, Ronaldinho, and Clarence Seedorf. My appreciation for these football icons has also made watching historic El Clásico encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona even more enjoyable, allowing me to appreciate the rivalry without taking sides in the endless debates between their supporters. Among all my football memories, one stands above the rest: AC Milan’s redemption against Liverpool in the 2007 UEFA Champions League final, when Filippo Inzaghi scored a historic brace to secure a memorable victory.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work with two of the Middle East’s leading sports platforms, Kooora and GOAL.com. These experiences have given me extensive knowledge of both Arab and international football, while allowing me to develop my skills across different areas of sports journalism and digital content. In 2022, I was honored to become a member of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, marking an important milestone in my professional journey. In January 2026, I took another significant step in my career by transitioning to the English-language edition of GOAL.com, broadening my experience in international football journalism and English-language sports content while continuing to pursue my passion for telling the stories that make football the world's game.
