Liverpool reportedly made a massive offer to Napoli to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia last summer.
The Reds will face Kvaratskhelia’s current side, PSG, in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.
However, if things had reportedly gone according to plan last summer, the player could have lined up in a red shirt.
The Georgian is a player that has been linked to an Anfield switch since he broke out into the limelight. There was a tentative interest last January, with Arne Slot’s side named one of the parties interested in a move for the tricky attacker after he registered his desire to leave Napoli.
But the Red’s interest was never concretised and the 24-year-old moved to Paris in a reported €70m deal.
However, according to the latest report from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli missed out on a bigger windfall from the Kvaratskhelia’s sale, while PSG got the player for cheaper.
According to the reporter, Liverpool offered Napoli €100m to sign the Georgian in the summer, with the Reds also said to have been willing to allow him to stay on loan for a year.
“Last summer, Liverpool tried to snatch Khvicha Kvaratskelia from Napoli,” the reporter said.
“In the final days of the summer transfer window, the Reds put a monstrous offer on the table: around 100 million euros to buy the Georgian.”
“The English club, however, had the intention of leaving the 2001-born player on loan to Napoli for a year. The Azzurri did not consider the solution and decided to refuse the rich offer.”
Perhaps Liverpool were willing to repeat the trick they used in the signing of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s national team teammate, Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Reds signed the Georgian goalkeeper last summer but allowed him to remain on loan at his parent club, Valencia.
If Liverpool had succeeded in signing Kvaratskhelia, it would have represented a statement signing by the Reds, who are said to be planning for major reinforcements next summer.
