However, Man Utd have found themselves in financial difficulties and selling academy stars brings pure profit. Hence, they reportedly attempted to sell Alejandro Garnacho in the winter window to balance the books.
Marcus Rashford was also on the transfer list but he only left on loan to Villa. Additionally, Mainoo was tentatively linked with a move away from the club.
Now, The Daily Mail report that Ruben Amorim is keen on keeping hold of Mainoo and Garnacho and Man Utd are prepared to agree fresh deal with Mainoo – whose current contract will run until 2027.
The Old Trafford club have been in negotiations with the English midfielder over a new deal for a while and have held fresh talks recently in the hope of finally reaching an agreement.
The 19-year-old has been a key player for Man Utd and also an England international but is one of the lowest-paid players at the club.
So, he wants a significant pay raise that will reflect the status he holds in the first Xl and wants around £180,000-a-week in salary plus bonuses. However, Man Utd don’t want to spend that much and are hoping a compromise can be reached.
In case United can’t persuade him to sign an extension, they are ready to sell him for a fee of around £70m-£80m with Chelsea leading with the interest.
Mainoo was an undisputed starter in Erik ten Hag’s first Xl but Amorim hasn’t been able to find the best place for him in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.
The Red Devils reportedly need funds to rebuild the squad and it doesn’t look likely that they will get money from European football next season.
Therefore, if Amorim’s side can’t find an agreement with Mainoo over a new deal then selling him would be the right decision as the player’s demand of £180,000-a-week is a bit steep considering his age. What do you think?
