This season has shown the Lilywhites the need for depth and quality in the roster, given how Ange Postecoglou has struggled to play a side without makeshift changes along the campaign, and centre defence has been the most affected position, in turn leading to a lot of defensive fatalities with goals being shipped regularly, and Daniel Levy did have his moment of madness trying to resolve this when he put in a much talked-about £70m bid to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on deadline day of the winter transfer window.
Tottenham’s £70m bid for Marc Guehi – A sign of things to come?

Will Tottenham bid again for Marc Guehi?
John Wenham, owner of the reputed Lilywhite Rose podcast, also agrees with the fact that a massive bid for Guehi means Tottenham wouldn’t give up on him and try to secure his services again when the summer comes around.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, he said:
“However, I just think after offering that kind of money for Guéhi in the winter, that tells me that Tottenham will go back in for him during the summer.”
Is Tottenham’s pursuit of Guehi a clear message about Romero’s future?
Does Guehi approach mean the end of Romero at Tottenham?

Guehi has a strong defensive capacity; he is exceptional with his technical skills and possesses a strong left foot with the ability to progress that ball from the first phase by attracting press before realising through line-breaking passes (something Postecoglou would love in his first phase build-up). And then he has that calmness under pressure, and you often see him dribbling out of tight spaces or recycling possession intelligently.
The Chelsea academy graduate is also very adept on the physical side of things and also has a good recovery pace.
But then the question comes in (and it’s a running discussion among supporters): does bringing in Marc Guehi mean Cristian Romero will leave the club when the summer comes around?
You rarely see Daniel Levy splash £70 million on a backup player and then complement it with Guéhi’s profile, who is a Premier League-proven starter and England international and wouldn’t join the North Londoners for a rotational role.
And with Romero’s contract at N17 coming to a conclusion in 2026 and any extension talks being complicated by Real Madrid’s long-standing interest in securing his signature, Tottenham may cash in now to avoid losing him on a free transfer. Moreover, there has been a running criticism of the Argentine World Cup winner among the supporters after he recently questioned Spurs ambition while comparing the club unfavourably to Premier League rivals like Manchester City and Chelsea—this may push Levy to get rid of him at the first chance he gets.
And looking at Guehi, his composure on the ball complemented by how he positions himself in a high line is much better suited to Ange Postecoglou’s playing style than the aggressive and risk-prone Romero’s. Moreover, the fact that the Eagles defender comes in with a homegrown status means it helps Tottenham with better squad dynamics.

While everything is ifs and buts at the moment, the club’s willingness to sign a new defender definitely suggests that Romero’s days in North London are numbered.
