People ‘within football’ are saying forward is more likely to join Tottenham instead of…

In the summer of 2023, Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United in the race to sign James Maddison.

It was a blow for the Magpies, who had relentlessly pursued James Maddison and tried to bring him to St James’ Park from Leicester City.

It was even claimed that Maddison wanted to join Newcastle, only for wages to eventually be an issue as Tottenham secured a deal.

Fast forward to 2025 and Tottenham Hotspur could beat Newcastle United to the signature of another exciting English attacker.

The favourites to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton

Newcastle are interested in signing Tyler Dibling, with the 19-year-old set to leave Southampton at the end of the season.

He would be an exciting addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, and Newcastle recently scouted Dibling as they continue to firm up their summer transfer plans.

However, it was claimed in January that Tottenham want Dibling too, and would like to get an early deal in place to bring him to North London.

That could happen according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Tyler Dibling’s future.

“The feeling within football is that Tottenham Hotspur are the favourites to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton this summer,” he said.

Newcastle on course to miss out on Tyler Dibling again

While the race is not over, Newcastle United certainly do not appear to be leading the charge for Dibling’s signature.

That is a shame, as he is the type of player who would be adored at St James’ Park. Toon fans love flair players like Dibling, and to have him in attack alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon would make Newcastle’s forward line even more dangerous.

If Dibling does join Tottenham ahead of Newcastle, it would be the second time that the Magpies have missed out.

Dan Ashworth tried to sign Dibling in 2022, back when he was just 16-years-old. Newcastle held talks with the teenager as he visited the North East, but a deal was not finalised.

He went to Chelsea instead before returning to Southampton, where he has risen through the ranks to excel in the Premier League.

The hope was that those performances would give Newcastle a second chance to sign Dibling, but it is Tottenham who are in pole position as it stands.
