Seahawks WR Dk Metcalf requests trade, per report

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf has reportedly requested a trade, per a report on March 5, 2025 by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter. Metcalf is also seeking a new new contract with just one year left on his current deal, per an anonymous source.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has said numerous times that he will always practice due diligence by checking into any player the team sees as talented. Without question, Metcalf is enormously talented, perhaps the NFL’s most imposing active wide receiver.

As you might expect, the Bills have been linked to Metcalf, who’s also drawn interest from the Kansas City Chiefs and other unnamed teams, as reported by Seahawks reporter Corbin K. Smith on March 2. Metcalf is the complete package, and a wide receiver the likes of which Buffalo seems to constantly seek out — and hasn’t had since Eric Moulds.

Two other teams that I’ve been told are monitoring DK Metcalf situation are Bills and Chiefs.

Right now, consensus is #Seahawks aren’t looking to make a deal and still would like to extend star receiver. But several teams are keeping tabs in case door opens to acquire him.

Having just turned 27 this past December, Metcalf should have plenty of years left as an uber-productive alpha receiver who plays even bigger than his 6’4”, 235-pound frame. In six seasons with the Seahawks, Metcalf has 438 receptions (726 targets) for 6,324 yards (14.4 y/r) and 48 touchdowns; adding two Pro Bowl nominations (2020, 2023) and one second-team All-Pro selection in 2020 (all stats courtesy of Pro Football Reference).

Metcalf was injured during the 2024 NFL regular season, starting 12 of just 15 games played — which included him being sidelined when Seattle hosted Buffalo. Despite the downturn in certain key statistics such as receptions and touchdowns in recent seasons, Metcalf remains an elite and dangerous WR1. He’s posted 1,000-plus yards in three seasons, never falling more than 100 yards short of the mark (his rookie season) otherwise.

To say that DK Metcalf wouldn’t improve the Bills’ offense would be a misjudgement. The hesitancy for many may come when considering his alpha personality, and being unhappy with his current situation.

Undoubtedly, Josh Allen and Metcalf would raise each other’s bar, similarly to what unfolded when Stefon Diggs landed at One Bills Drive. But with an alpha receiver, there’s potential for volatility in the locker room, on the field, and at the podium. There are those among in-tune Seahawks fans who see an addition-by-subtraction scenario in losing Metcalf.

The other concern, and it’s a big one, is what a new contract looks like for Metcalf. He’s entering the final year of a three-year, $72 million contract, which at that point made him one of the top 10 paid receivers in the NFL (per reporters with The Athletic). Will he demand something similar — and what would that mean for Buffalo’s ability to shore up the defensive concerns, even with the increased salary cap?

Metcalf has a $31.8 million cap hit for the 2025 NFL season, which is now the highest hit among wide receivers. The Bills would most certainly look to extend his contract, lowing the cap hit this season, adding void years, and giving Metcalf a raise in the process.

Still, the most important issue comes down to chemistry, and what adding Metcalf represents for Buffalo. The production, measurables, and talent are elite, but does Metcalf’s desire to join a contender outweigh personal statistical accomplishments, many of which may impact his annual salary?

Would Metcalf sign on to play for an offense where “everybody eats” and no one complains about their portion? Recall, Mack Hollins finished the 2024 regular season as the wide receiver catching the most touchdowns (5) from Allen. To this point, offensive coordinator Joe Brady has shown a commitment to establishing the line of scrimmage, remaining bullish in the run game, while preferring efficiency over a lights-out air-raid passing attack.

On any play, five different players may be the main target. Would that work for DK Metcalf, who rightfully should expect to be the main target on every snap possible? It’s difficult to predict how it all would go, but it’s at least fun to day dream about Allen-to-Metcalf.
