Green Bay Packers: 2-Time Pro Bowler’s Trade Request Should Be Music to Fans’ Ears

The latest news out of Seattle should be music to Green Bay Packers ears. Early Wednesday afternoon, the Seattle Seahawks announced the release of 10-year wide receiver Tyler Lockett. Another announcement followed soon after.

Rather than the team cutting ties, however, it was a player expressing this wish. After murmurs of grumbling and discontent, a Packers trade target has formally requested out, opening the door to months of mock trades and speculation.

Seattle Seahawks Making Waves with Wide Receiver News

NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero dropped the bomb on twitter less than an hour after the Lockett news:

Packers fans and writers have ogled Metcalf for weeks now, seeing in him the true WR1 that the team lacks. Last season in Seattle was another solid season for the bodybuilding receiver as he finished with 66 catches for 992 yards in 15 games. He has notched at least 58 receptions, 100 targets and 900 yards every season in his 6-year career. Impressively, his 5 TDs in 2024 were a career low.

Coming on the heels of Lockett’s release, Metcalf’s demand is ripe with drama. Maybe it would have happened anyway, but cutting his fellow wide receiver and teammate of six years for nothing in return, even though it does help Seattle’s salary cap, could be interpreted to signal that the franchise is prioritizing finances over talent.

After a disappointing 10-7 season in which Seattle failed to make the playoffs for the second straight year, Metcalf might be better off elsewhere if he wants to contend for a Super Bowl.

In the right situation, he could impact a team’s chances in a major way.

DK Metcalf Isn’t Elite But He Is a Game Changer–and for Contenders like the Green Bay Packers, the Price May Be in Range

It’s not just Packers fans who have been clamoring for the 2-time Pro Bowler. In response to the news, plenty of other fanbases wheedled for the star to come to town.

“He should go to ravens,” one fan tweeted. “That’ll be the winner of the Super Bowl. Henry/metcalf/lamar. Who stopping them?”

With another top dog target alongside Zay Flowers and Baltimore’s dynamic ground game, the Ravens would be an even scarier offense next season.

What would teams need to give up to win Metcalf’s services? NFL talk show host Zach Gelb suggested suitors may have to pony up a first round pick, but Bleacher Report’s James Palmer believes otherwise.

I don’t think so. This isn’t my opinion, this is just talk. One thing with DK that has come up, if you’re not an elite route runner, when you start to get up in age, it’s a little bit harder to win consistently. DK’s still a physical specimen, and still is such a mismatch because of his size, but he’s not an elite route runner. He’s not a guy that can run a million different routes in the route tree.

And so some people believe that as age comes along, you don’t stay in the league very long like that. That’s happened to players that are just bigger-bodied advantage type of guys, and then when push comes to shove down the road, they didn’t learn how to play it another way. I don’t think DK is viewed as first round type of trade.

Despite misgivings about Metcalf’s adaptability, as Palmer says, the 27-year-old remains one of the NFL’s most daunting matchups, a guy who can simply outmuscle defenders for contested catches. Perhaps a decline is coming, but he has produced steadily since entering the league. He isn’t a Tee Higgins or a Justin Jefferson, but he would be a clearcut WR1 for many teams.

If the Packers have to sacrifice a second round pick, or a late rounder and an NFL player, acquiring Metcalf is a tantalizing proposition. Maybe such a trade isn’t savvy, but even for a slight overpay, he is the type of player that would expedite Green Bay’s win-now prospects just by being on the field.

If the asking price isn’t through the roof, Opposing GMs should be peppering Seattle’s number right about now with inquiries.
