Report: Newcastle United handed £62.5m transfer boost by Mikel Arteta

Newcastle United fans are receiving a lot of bad news at the moment.

Anthony Gordon is suspended, while Lewis Hall is injured. Both players will therefore miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, as the Magpies aim to end their trophy drought.

It is a trophy drought that will carry on for another year if they do not beat Liverpool at Wembley, as Newcastle United have just been knocked out of the FA Cup.

A lot of supporters are already looking towards the summer, with Paul Mitchell set to have funds to overhaul Eddie Howe’s squad.

There will be major changes, with Newcastle eyeing three outfield signings.

Arsenal’s latest Matheus Cunha stance

Eddie Howe needs to bring in another forward, which is why Newcastle are interested in Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian attacker looks set to be on the move this summer, despite recently signing a new contract at Molineux. That deal includes a release clause, which means Newcastle can sign Cunha for £62.5million.

But so can Newcastle’s Premier League rivals, with Arsenal also eyeing a move for Cunha after missing out on him in January.

However, the Gunners might be having second thoughts about signing the 25-year-old.

According to TalkSPORT, Mikel Arteta is questioning Cunha’s character as Arsenal weigh up whether or not to try and sign him.

This comes after Cunha was sent off during Wolves’ FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth. He received a red card for punching, kicking and headbutting Milos Kerkez, as Cunha’s temperament got the better of him once again.

It is the second time this season that Cunha has been involved in an incident like this. Back in December he clashed with a member of the Ipswich Town security team, which resulted in a two-game ban.

Now Cunha will miss another three games through suspension, while there is the possibility of his ban being extended further.

Newcastle United must decide if Cunha is worth the risk

With Arsenal perhaps less likely to make a move for Cunha, Newcastle United could be presented with an opportunity.

However, the forward’s antics this season suggest it would be a risk to sign him and make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever. After all, the Magpies are currently paying the price for one of their attackers losing their head in Anthony Gordon.

Eddie Howe needs players he can rely on. Gordon has been that, but he let Newcastle down at a crucial moment. Cunha has done the same for Wolves, as they aim to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle must weigh up whether Cunha has enough talent and versatility to be a risk worth taking. Many would argue that he is, as he enjoys a spectacular season at Molineux. In 29 games this season, Cunha has scored 15 goals and provided four assists.

Cunha looks ideal for Newcastle, but the reservations that Mikel Arteta has will also be considered on Tyneside.
