Former Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim feels taking the Manchester United job was a mistake.
According to a report from Football Insider, Ruben Amorim regrets accepting the Manchester United job. The Portuguese manager has told friends that he made a mistake by taking over the role at Old Trafford.
United are going through one of their most difficult season ever. Prior to the start of the campaign, there was a lot of uncertainty around the future of Erik ten Hag, but the board decided to back him. However, after a poor start to the campaign, they ended up parting ways with him.
The Red Devils were looking for someone who could build a project in the long run and help steady the ship. Having done wonders at Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim was United’s priority target, and they did convince him to join them mid-season.
While they didn’t expect any miracles from the Portuguese manager, they did hope that his arrival could improve them a touch. However, things haven’t gone according to plan as United sit 14th on the points table, and they have been knocked out of both the domestic competitions. Their only hope of silverware is the Europa League, but given their current form, it seems like a distant dream.
Amorim regrets accepting the United job
They have lost eight out of the 16 league games since his arrival. There is already talk about his future at the club following their defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup. Meanwhile, the report has revealed that Amorim regrets taking charge at Old Trafford.
He has told his friends that he thinks he made a mistake by taking the job. The 40-year-old believes he should have waited until at least the summer and regrets giving in to the United board’s ‘now-or-never’ ultimatum.
He was doing wonders at Sporting CP, and leaving them in mid-November has caused problems for him as well as the Portuguese club. Amorim has been shocked by how bad the United players are, having initially thought they were much better than the media had portrayed.
Not only did they not have funds to back in the winter, the Portuguese manager even had a rift with Marcus Rashford before he left the club in January on loan. He doesn’t even have the best of relations with Alejandro Garnacho. Everything that could have gone wrong for him at United seems to have gone wrong.
