Ruben Amorim is trying to implement his preferred methods at Manchester United.
After enjoying success at Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim was appointed Manchester United head coach in November but there hasn’t been a ‘new manager bounce’ as expected.
Results have worsened since Erik ten Hag was dismissed by United. The Reds are 14th in the Premier League and out of both domestic cups – Carabao Cup and FA Cup – with the Europa League being the only winnable trophy.
Every managerial switch will bring changes and United are witnessing that. There is more emphasis on wing-backs than previously, which is why Patrick Dorgu was brought in during the January transfer window.
Dorgu’s arrival will help United adapt to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation which has caused controversy among the fanbase. The Portuguese coach still needs to persuade everyone that his tactics are worth pursuing long-term.

Ruben Amorim will stick to formation
Even though the results have been dire, Amorim is not set to change his ways.
Reports were keen to ask Amorim – yet again – if he is willing to change his tactics should results continue to worsen for United’s first-team.
Amorim doesn’t think the system is the problem and told reporters at his press conference this evening that he doesn’t plan to change.

“I think the system is not the problem; it is the way of playing,” Amorim said.
“We have a lot of problems and we are trying to work on the problems. Every system needs different characteristics. I am still really confident. I will not change that [my formation].”
United play with a back three in possession but it becomes a back five whenever the team loses possession. Amorim’s side are leaking goals at the back and not scoring enough at the other end.
It doesn’t help that United have lost key players Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo for the remainder of the season due to injuries.
There is a lot to fix at United.
Amorim needs to make the most of what he has
With United being hit with an injury crisis, the manager must make the most out of what he has available.
That is the case for Amorim between now and the summer.
Speaking about the Europa League, Amorim outlined how it can help United attract better players in the future – as a route into the Champions League.
“Because we are out of the cups that could change a lot of things. Manchester United can have the goal to have the best players in the future,” he said.
“I understand that the Europa League can change things.”
