Jaguars expected to release WR Christian Kirk, per report

Wide receiver Christian Kirk’s time in Duval County comes to an end after three seasons catching passes for the Jacksonville Jaguars. ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on March 5 that the Jaguars are set to release Kirk, and will save more than $10.4 million against their 2025 salary cap.

This move was seen by some as obvious, given Kirk’s $15.5-million base salary this coming season but no guaranteed money. Instead of paying that, the Jaguars instead choose to move on and eat the lower sum of $13.65 million in dead cap.

Releasing Christian Kirk will save the Jaguars over $10,4 million agains the cap. Kirk now will become a free agent in an increasingly crowded WR market. https://t.co/ERoSmzI92I

Kirk landed with Jacksonville in 2022 as a free agent following a three-year stint playing for the Arizona Cardinals, who drafted him in Round 2 (47th overall) during the 2018 NFL Draft. The Jaguars rewarded Kirk with a four-year, $72 million contract that was widely panned in NFL circles — given he had never recorded a 1,000 yard season to that point.

Kirk’s first season in Duval went better than most predicted, with him grabbing 84 receptions (133 targets) for 1,108 yards (13.2 y/r) and eight touchdowns in 17 starts — all career highs apart from the y/r. The next two seasons Kirk started 19 of 20 games played, totaling 84 receptions (132 targets) for a combined 1,166 yards (13.9 y/r) and just four touchdowns.

The 2024 NFL season was Kirk’s worst statistically, where he started seven of eight games played, making 27 receptions (47 targets) for 379 yard (14 y/r) and just one touchdowns. In seven seasons, Kirk has caught 404 passes (623 targets) for 5,176 yards (12.8 y/r) with 29 touchdowns; adding 22 rushes for 159 yards (mostly with AZ).

Would the Buffalo Bills have interest in signing Kirk to their roster this season, or is it possible he reached his ceiling back in 2022? Apart from the still-unknown cost of doing business even in what Schefter has described as “an increasingly crowded WR market,” there’s Kirk’s potential fit with Buffalo’s offense to consider.

In truth, Kirk represents the type of wide receiver the Bills seem to roster in spades. He’s more of a slot threat at 5’11” and 200 pounds, even if he has proven to be dangerous on the perimeter. Does Buffalo really need another “waterbug” type of receiver, or will that prove detrimental to snap shares for Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel, both under contract for 2025?

What do you think, Rumblers: Should the Bills make a play to add Christian Kirk to their offense this season?
