Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Luis Campos vented his fury at the match officials over their decision not to send off Liverpool centre back Ibrahima Konate in scenes captured live on French television.

Campos was still raging at half-time of the Champions League round-of-16 first leg at Parc des Princes after a VAR check recommended neither a penalty nor a red card for Konate denying a goalscoring opportunity when he appeared to bring down PSG forward Bradley Barcola just inside the penalty area.

France international Konate was the last man and video replays showed contact between both players before Barcola went down but the officials did not consider his challenge a foul to leave the hosts furious.

And Campos was seen shouting “It’s a red card or a penalty” repeatedly at Italian referee Davide Massa as he made his way back to the changing rooms during the interval.

PSG players remonstrated with Massa during a moderately long VAR check with Rio Ferdinand, working for TNT Sports as a pundit, saying he was “amazed” that Konate did not see red.

" I can't believe how lucky Liverpool have been there,” former Manchester United centre back Ferdinand said.

“If Barcola and Konate were shoulder to shoulder then I get it. But Konate barges him basically on the numbers on his back, between his shoulder blades.”

Alisson Becker produced a stunning performance, making nine saves, for Arne Slot's Premier League leaders against the Ligue 1 champions in waiting during what was, by some distance, the Reds' most difficult test of the season so far.

But substitute Harvey Elliott emerged from the substitutes' bench to score a priceless goal for the visitors after only 47 seconds following good build up play from Darwin Nunez.

The second leg takes place at Anfield next Tuesday.
