Sonia Bompastor pleased to return to winning ways

Sonia Bompastor believes Chelsea's winning mentality shone through after the Blues used the frustration of dropping points at the weekend to bounce back with a 3-1 victory against Leicester City at Kingsmeadow.

Only three days after Sunday's draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Blues impressively grasped their chance to put three points on the board at the first opportunity.

Catarina Macario and Aggie Beever-Jones scored in the first half, before substitute Erin Cuthbert struck our third late on to extend our lead at the top of the table to eight points, but having played one game more than second-placed Manchester United.

After the win, Bompastor said: 'After dropping points in the last game, everyone was all frustrated. We are all competitors and we hate to drop points. That's the winning mentality at Chelsea.

'We had one day where we were frustrated and then we had to bounce back because it was a quick turnaround to the game tonight, and that was maybe the best thing that could happen to us.

'From this season and also from last season, Chelsea have always shown they react. I was expecting to see that from my players after we dropped points on Sunday.'

In her post-match press conference, our head coach was asked her thoughts on conceding in our last four matches across all competitions, with Yuka Momiki on the scoresheet for the Foxes this evening.

She said: 'If you analyse the game tonight, it's sometimes having smarter decisions on the pitch. You just need to recognise that the other team is waiting for you to play a short ball to press, and we didn't recognise that.

'We still played short instead of maybe kicking the longer ball and beating their press, but sometimes that can happen, but we need to be more smart in that situation.'

Against Leicester, forward Mia Fishel was included in the Chelsea match-day squad for the first time since February 2024, having recovered from a long-term anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Bompastor said: 'Having Mia in the squad was really positive news. She's really close to being back to the competitive level. It's still part of the process, but I think the game tonight was not appropriate for her to come in.

'It will come soon and that's really good for us to have her. She's in a good place, but coming back from an ACL you always need to go step by step, build up your fitness and also your confidence.

'Mia is a really good player. She works hard for the team. I haven't seen her [play] yet as the manager and playing games with me, but from what I see in training sessions, she has the right mentality and works really hard.'
