U.S. President Donald Trump has granted a one-month exemption for U.S. automakers on the U.S. new 25 tariffs for imports from Mexico and Canada, which took effect on Tuesday. White House Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday that following discussions with the "Big Three" U.S. automakers, Trump decided to give a one-month exemption on any autos coming through the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement(USMCA), which refers to the North American free trade agreement. Leavitt added that at the request of the companies associated with USMCA, Trump gave them an exemption for one month so they’re not at an economic disadvantage. The remarks appear to highlight that the exemption was for protecting the U.S. auto industry, not for the U.S. relations with Canada and Mexico.
Trump made the move after talking with the Big Three automakers -- Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler.
