South Korea’s Seoul to encourage seniors to return driver’s licenses

SEOUL - The Seoul Metropolitan Government will encourage senior drivers to surrender their driver’s licenses, as part of efforts to reduce car accidents.

According to the city government, drivers aged 70 and older can surrender their licenses at their local community centres and receive a 200,000 won (S$185) prepaid transit pass starting March 10.

The city noted that the value of the pass has been doubled from the previous 100,000 won and will be available for up to 31,800 seniors on a first-come, first-served basis.

The measure was introduced to reduce social costs associated with traffic accidents involving senior drivers.

According to a 2024 Korea Transport Institute report, an estimated 420,000 won could be saved annually for each senior driver who surrenders their driver’s license.

The transit card is charged with 200,000 won at the time it is issued. It can be used in buses, taxis and nationwide T-money-affiliated stores. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
