TEMPE – After a short break in the schedule, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo is set to take on undefeated conference foe, No. 1 Stanford at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. The game will be available to stream on Overnght with live stats available on 6-8 Sports.
Arizona State returns to conference play following a ninth place finish in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine, Calif. The Sun Devils finished with a 3-1 record over the weekend tournament including overtime victories over two ranked opponents, No. 15 Indiana and No. 12 LMU.
The match up against Stanford is the first of five straight MPSF conference matches for the Sun Devils. The Maroon and Gold look to make a statement victory opening their final three-game home stand of the season.
SUN DEVIL OUTLOOK
Arizona State (16-4, 0-1 MPSF)
Finishing all five regular season tournaments, ASU boasted a 16-3 record.
The Sun Devils have seven ranked wins this season over then No. 23 SDSU, No. 15 UC Davis, No. 10 LMU, No. 22 Cal Baptist, No. 15 UCSB, No. 17 Indiana, and No. 14 LMU.
Junior Millie Quin leads the Sun Devil offense with 62 goals and 16 assists. She also boasts 20 steals and 10 drawn exclusions.
OPPONENT OUTLOOK
Stanford (12-0, 0-0 MPSF)
Stanford defeated No. 13 UC Davis at home last week, 17-11.
The Cardinals took first place at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational beating three top-10 opponents, No. 8 UC San Diego, No. 4 UCLA and No. 2 USC.
Stanford is 10-0 against ranked opponents this season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Sun Devils return to action after competing in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational from Feb. 21-23. Arizona State went 3-1 to finish ninth overall in the weekend tournament including two victories in overtime against No. 15 Indiana and No. 12 LMU. Junior Millie Quin finished with 22 points (17G, 5A) in the tournament including a six-goal outing against LMU. Freshmen Itziar Almeda and Hannah McClaskey also left their mark in the final match of the tournament against LMU with McClaskey recording her first four-goal game and Almeda boasting a 10-point performance (5G, 5A).
HISTORY VS THE CARDINALS
The last time that the Cardinals and the Sun Devils met was during the 2024 season where Stanford came away with the victory. While a close match, the Cardinals were able to net the extra goal to finish 10-9. The overall record between the two schools is in favor of the Cardinals with 32 wins and the first program win against Stanford came in 2021 when ASU was able to clinch a 10-9 upset victory.
MPSF STAT LEADERS
Even with the off week, several Sun Devils sit high in the MPSF weekly rankings. Junior Millie Quin leads goal scoring (58), points (86), and is tied for second in steals (25). Itziar Almeda is sixth in goal scoring (48), third in points (76), and fifth in assists (28). In net, Keri Glad has the fourth most saves (101) and the fifth best save percentage at 61.96%. Sanne Keijzer sits in eighth for saves with 63 and Marie Rudasics sits in second for her save percentage with 67.3%.
