Stefan Borson drops verdict on Osimhen agreeing £400K-a-wk Man United deal

Manchester United have faced various issues this season following several disappointing performances.

Ruben Amorim’s side were knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Fulham on Sunday (2 March), while they sit 14th in the Premier League table after 27 matches.

Their only remaining hope of claiming silverware and Europe for next season is in the Europa League, where they will face Real Sociedad in the last 16.

Man United have struggled for goals in this campaign, with Bruno Fernandes their top scorer on 11 strikes across all competitions.

United have been linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Old Trafford chiefs are unlikely to agree a deal for the 26-year-old due to his “enormous” wages.

Osimhen has registered 22 goals and five assists in 28 appearances for Galatasaray this season.

Fabrizio Romano reported on 23 February the Nigeria international’s release clause will drop to between €75-80million (£62-66million) this summer.

Man United transfer plan revealed after £365m hit

Borson insisted United will look to sign younger players on lower salaries in the summer window in a bid to bring down their wage bill, which stood at £365million last season.

He told Football Insider: “I think there are two aspects to the Osimhen deal.

“One is whether they could do it, so do they have the cash to do it? I suspect that they don’t have the cash to do it and that they would need more money to be put in by the shareholders or to borrow more under their various facilities.

“Now, whether that’s feasible or not, who knows? But put that to one side, I think there are enough indicators that a player like Osimhen is absolutely not the type of target that Manchester United are pursuing in this current phase.

“That’s for two reasons. One, because his fee would be higher than they’d want to pay, even at £62million. His age is probably borderline as to whether he’s the right age that they’d want to look at, but most of all, his wages would be enormous.

“He’s another one of these players that potentially falls into the £20million a year bracket. I don’t see that being where United are going to go. Clearly, a striker is going to have a different earning profile to others.

“But I just don’t see that they’re going to invest again at these sorts of very big levels while they’re in the middle of effectively a retrenchment and restructuring of the organisation.

“I think United will be looking for more players of the type that they’ve been buying over the last couple of windows, so younger, lower salaries and building back up to the salary bracket that they have now.

“I think you’ll see some quite dramatic falls in annualised wages at United.”

Man United could make Liam Delap move after ‘huge’ Ipswich reveal

United are believed to be eyeing a move for Liam Delap after he’s performed well at Ipswich Town despite their struggles this season.

Former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Ipswich will demand a “huge” fee for Delap once the summer transfer window opens.

Kieran McKenna’s side paid £20million to sign the 22-year-old from Man City last summer, with the forward registering 10 goals and two assists in 29 appearances this season.
