Liverpool, Arsenal&Villa claim first-leg success in Champions League last 16

The three English teams have made an impressive start to the Champions League Round of 16 matches.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa all recorded victories away from home to get themselves in a brilliant position to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Reds came away with a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday to secure a first-leg advantage in the tie.

PSG completely dominated the game, boasting over 70 percent possession and 27 shots. But with goalkeeper Alisson Becker excellent between the sticks, the French giants failed to breach the visitors’ defences.

Then in the 87th minute, substitute Harvey Elliott netted a goal by slotting a first-time shot beneath Gianluigi Donnarumma.

With the return leg set to be played at Anfield, Liverpool are now favourites to make it to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Meanwhile, Villa and Arsenal are also in a dominating position to qualify for the last eight.

Unai Emery’s side ran out 3-1 winners against Club Brugge on Tuesday at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Leon Bailey put the Lions ahead in the opening three minutes, but Maxim De Cuyper quickly restored parity for the hosts.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until two goals in six minutes late on turned the tie massively in favour of Villa.

Of the three English sides, Arsenal were the most dominating in their victory over PSV Eindhoven. The Gunners put seven past the Eredivisie outfit to wrap up a 7-1 success, with six of their players earning their names on the scoresheet.
