Newcastle have suffered another crushing injury blow ahead of their Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

Defender Sven Botman is set for knee surgery, meaning that Eddie Howe has lost three regular starters in the space of a few days. Winger Anthony Gordon got himself banned for three games after being shown a straight card in their dramatic FA Cup defeat at home to Brighton on Sunday, although the Magpies can appeal the decision.

It then emerged on Tuesday that left-back Lewis Hall would miss the remainder of the season after suffering a foot injury. In addition, there are also concerns over striker Alexander Isak, who limped off before extra-time against Brighton.

Now Botman has joined the trio on the sidelines,. He's due to undergo surgery on a knee problem. The Dutchman only returned from a 10-month layoff in January following his ACL injury.

Botman's new issue is said to be on his opposite knee and Newcastle hope that it isn't as serious as his previous absence. The 25-year-old has missed the Magpies' last five games and a meeting with a specialist this week determined that surgery is the best course of action.

There was a boost for Newcastle fans on Tuesday afternoon, as Isak was spotted taking part in the club's promotional day ahead of next Sunday's final. The Swede was also pictured training after a statement confirmed that team-mate Hall, tipped for an England call-up, wouldn't play again this term.

"Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season after sustaining an injury to a bone in his foot," Newcastle posted on their website. "The 20-year-old was injured during the Magpies' Premier League fixture at Liverpool.

"Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club's medical team. Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Lewis the very best with his surgery and recovery."

Howe is expected to provide an update on his squad at a press conference on Friday, previewing Monday's trip to West Ham. Newcastle also have the right to appeal Gordon's red card, with Howe saying after their FA Cup exit: "Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there's grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation.

"I'd need to see it, I can't sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I've done the work that you've done and looked at it. But knowing the player, I know there's no malice intended there."
