Report: Newcastle United's Sven Botman hope despite being told he needs surgery

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman is set to undergo another knee operation, having just recovered from an ACL injury.

The Dutch centre-back has missed Newcastle United’s previous five games with a knee issue, but there had been hope of a looming return.

After Newcastle’s defeat to Brighton, Eddie Howe said Sven Botman was close to a comeback after taking part in light training. Fast forward a few days and there are fears that his season could be over.

Sven Botman set for knee surgery

That comes from the Daily Mail, who have reported that Botman is set for surgery after seeing a specialist about his latest knee injury that forced him off against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

They report that the 25-year-old has been advised to go under the knife and that no risks will be taken. That comes after Botman suffered an ACL injury at the beginning of last season but chose not to have surgery before going on to suffer another ACL injury.

It has been a rotten period of Botman’s career, and the heartache looks set to continue as he prepares to miss more football for the Magpies – including the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16th.

Newcastle United handed Sven Botman injury encouragement

It is a devastating blow for a player who has already had two crushing injuries over the past 18 months.

After recovering from one ACL injury, Botman suffered another in March 2024. That resulted in Botman having surgery and missing 10 months of action.

Toon fans will be fearful that he is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines, but the timeframe for this absence remains to be seen.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are hopeful that Botman’s new knee injury is not as bad as the one he recently recovered from. It is also noted that it is the opposite knee that Botman has hurt.

That is a small slice of positivity amid another crushing injury blow. Problems are mounting up for the Magpies, as they aim to end their trophy drought on March 16th.

Lewis Hall is injured and will miss the final. In fact, he will miss the rest of the season.

Elsewhere, Anthony Gordon is suspended after being sent off in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton.

The one major positive is that Alexander Isak is in training, amid fears that he could potentially miss the Carabao Cup final due to injury.
