Chelsea legend and current Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has insisted that he could sense a key resemblance between himself and Mason Mount when they worked together at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard was in the hot seat twice at Chelsea. Firstly, in a permanent capacity when he brought Mount into the first-team fold for the Blues having worked with him at Derby County and then again as a caretaker when the Manchester United man was set to leave to join the Reds.
It was clear throughout his time working with Mount that the former England international favoured the attacking midfielder and in the new podcast EFL Unlimited, Lampard explained why he gravitated towards the current United man. "I have this real professional drive and if I see something and I want to do it, I’ll do it," the 46-year-old said.
"If I can’t do it, I want to do it. If I do it well, I want to do it better. I’ve always had that and I have taken it into management. It becomes a bit more taxing as you get older as well.
"It’s a bit more tiring. When you’ve got loads of energy in your 20s, it’s like I’m going to the moon.
"Then when you’re in your 40s, you have days where you go: ‘I need a day off’. But the drive in me is still there, it just changes a bit I guess.

"I love seeing it in players, there’s some players that naturally have it. I always felt that with Mason Mount, working with him as a young player, I could see the look in his eye."
Unfortunately for Mount, his time at United has been plagued with injury problems that have squashed his momentum entirely. Since arriving at Old Trafford in July 2023, the midfielder has made just 32 appearances for the club scoring one goal and grabbing a singular assist in the process.
This season, the Reds' No.7 has managed to make 12 appearances for the Reds with his last performance coming in the Manchester derby back in September when he picked up a thigh issue. Following his injury at the Etihad Stadium, Ruben Amorim declared that Mount would be out for 'several weeks'.
